GPL still doesn't work

GPL still won't run, it gets to the title screen then gives the old
"This program has performed an illegal operation and is being shut
down".

I have downloaded the latest Voodoo 1 drivers, I've reinstalled
DirectX 5.0, and reinstalled the game a half dozen times.

According to the Sierra message board, quite a few people are having
this problem but so far there is no solution.

Any other suggestions before I take this back to EB?

I may be wrong, but I thought GPL used Direct X 6.
