How does a mouse work?

by Tony Jeste » Sat, 22 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I am so sick of cleaning/changing the pots in my TM Nascar Pro.  Today I
was looking at my mouse.  It would be so simple to  canabalize one and
connect one of the little wheels to the end of a steering shaft.  A
mouse is so precise, it would be perfect for a steering wheel.  Could it
be hooked up to a game port axis?

Yes a mouse would work but you would destroy it in about 10 minutes because of the lever you would put in it, on top of this the tiny plastic parts in a mouse are NOT designed to receive abuse from a BIG, HEAVY wheel.

Good idea though.

Other good idea, get an ACT LABS wheel, I guarantee you won't break it soon.

Basically a great idea. I thought the MSFF worked with an optical sensor?
(what is basically how a mouse works)
And if my LWFF works in the serial bus, and the mouse too, then the only
conceivable problem (for me) is to write a driver that "fools" a game or
the system to think there's a steeringwheel attached and not a mouse.

Hm, another problem might be the calibration... if you turn the wheel fast,
perhaps the optical sensor skippes some lightflashes, due to a frequency
boundary. With a mouse, you simply pick it up, throw it down again. With a
wheel, that is much harder.
