F1 2001 Vehicle Differences

by Haqsa » Tue, 05 Feb 2002 02:23:52

Hi everybody.  I've been wondering what the differences are in the
vehicles in F1 2001.  I've driven the Ferrari, the Williams, and the
McLaren, and even though I do not have the "all vehicles equal" setting
on they don't feel much different to me.  In GPL there are huge and
obvious differences between the different makes.  In F1 2001 I can't
seem to tell them apart from a performance standpoint, but maybe that's
just because I'm really not very good at driving these cars yet.  What
do you think?  What differences have you noticed?  Which car do you
prefer, and why?

Well, one obvious difference is that cars like the Benettons only have 6
gears.  Otherwise, I find that the differences are relatively subtle.  The
Williams appears to have the most power, but I find that the Ferrari is more
stable when cornering, though the top laps at Monaco on F1 2001 rank are in
a Williams - go figure ; ).  Btw, if you want to improve your driving, check
out F1 2001 rank - it seems to almost force you to become a better driver.
My driving have improved dramatically (even though I'm still crap)

I notice a significant difference in the cars. Try downloading Ian Bell's
McLaren setup from simbin.com for Hockenheim. Run some laps in the McLaren,
and then use that same setup with the Ferrari. You'll see a big difference
IMO. THe McLaren is much easier to drive. One setup doesn't always transfer
well from one car to another.

Maybe that's the problem I had.  I tried his Ferrari setup...

I didn't realize there WAS a F1 2001 rank.  Time to search Google...<g>

Well, I just tried out a Suzuka setup I downloaded for a Jordan which
seemed quite good but when I tried the setup with a McLaren, the
wheels kept locking up under brakes.  So that would indicate to me
that possibly the suspension behaves differently on the various cars
as well.

yeah, actually that's probably more likely - might just need to change the
weight distribution and/or brake balance.

Wouldn't it be nice if a modern F1 sim included the "Gerhard Berger" or
"Alex Wurz" option, where the driver is so big you don't have the option to
play with ballast, and as an added bonus, your cranium is so big you block
half the air intake...
