WIN95 boot disk for GP2

by no sp » Sat, 06 Dec 1997 04:00:00

Hello again everyone.

I don't want to sound stoopid or nuthin' BUT...

Does WIN95 running in the background slow down the frame rate and processor
occupancy in GP2?

I bought a P2/266 w/64 meg just to run GP2. I still can't run full tilt with all
graphics in SVGA. I would like to run at the full 25+ FPS. I don't care about
sky though but don't want to get bogged down when I ride up a guys gearbox
either. I can get it to about 19-21 FPS and still keep it under 100% occupancy.

Fixing a boot disk with WIN3.x was a breeze but I can't seem to get it for WIN95
(I'm still fairly new at it). I don't know where the mouse driver is. Can
someone tell me if it will make a difference in the frame rate? If it will, can
someone give me the steps for making one, please? Do I need to setup the memory
in the config.sys?

I've found personally, that there is no difference in running GP2 under Win95.  I
have a P166MMX and am running with everything except sky and I get about 160%
average occupancy.  Running in DOS gives the same results.
However, if you want to make a bootdisk then just type format a: /s at the DOS
prompt like you did in previous DOS versions.  Then you can make any changes to the
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
Make sure Config.sys has these lines in it :

device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe
devicehigh= (YOUR CD ROM DRIVER SHOULD GO HERE)

and AUTOEXEC.BAT should have the MSCDEX.EXE line in it.

Windows 95 doesn't have a DOS driver for the mouse.  Luckily there is one on the GP2
CD.  I think it's under :\UTIL\MOUSE or something,  You could also do a search for
it.

Again, depending on how your system is set up, I don't think you will see that much
improvement in DOS, but it's worth a try.

Regards

Andrew

Personally, I always noticed a small difference equivalent to maybe 1-2 fps.
Definately not just imagination (I play a lot and notice the difference between
NO slowdown and a LITTLE slowdown). The bootdisk will make a small difference
(maybe just enough) IMHO.

I can play GP2 from Win95 dos session but I get an annoying clicking from
the PC's internal speaker (apparently something to do with my graphics card
I have been led to believe) but otherwise (on P166, 32mb) it runs within a
whisker of being as fast as in full real mode DOS.

So, I only play in real mode DOS just to avoid the annoying clicking rather
than for any noticable speed gains.

Cheers.

If you have a Matrox Mystique card you may find upgrading the bios to
1.5 or above fixes the clicking sound.
