Win95-Simulators-Disc Compression.....

by Jott7 » Wed, 21 Feb 1996 04:00:00

I was wondering if anybody has any experience with the following:

Do you use Win95's disc compression?  Does it affect the performance of
IRC1 & 11 or NASCAR?  Does compression slow the system down?  What about
drivers for the compression, does it steal much needed memory?

What about MicroSoft Plus for Win95, do you use that?  Does it help?  Is
it worth it?

What about ICR II for Win95, will it be better?????

I'm thinking about buying MicroSoft Plus and compressing my drive, but I
wont do it if it makes the performance if my auto sims worse.

You will need to reserve some uncompressed space for some of your DOS
games.  ICR2 won't run booting to DOS unless I remove the automatically
loaded drvspace.bin (takes up too much memory).  I have created a boot
disk (via the program "C:\Program Files\Plus!\System\NOCOMP.EXE").  Even
running it off of my CD-ROM, you will need some uncompressed space to
load the necessary startup files.

Your "slow" down will depend on your CPU (I run on a P5-90 and notice a
slight hit -- only my main partition is compressed).

Better compression if you have the horsepower.

Jury is still out, again it will depend on your CPU, memory, and video
card/drivers.

If you have enough hard drive left over to have some uncompressed space
left and don't mind using a boot disk for memory hungry DOS games go for
it.  However, back up your hard disk religously if you compress it.

I'm using Windows 95 and Microsoft Plus. Plus doesn't enhance
performance at all. Having loaded Windows 95 I then compressed my C
drive, and couldn't get F1GP to run at all. I then emailed Microprose
to ask what the correct bootdisk settings were for running F1GP under
Windows 95, and although they told me what I should be using, the
f****** thing still didn't work. I eventually had to uncompress my
hard disk in order to make any of the Microprose games/sims run.
