Legendary Simulations (kinda a survey)

by Tim Wheatle » Wed, 19 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Firstly, this is a survey kinda, and I reserve the right to use any comments
on my site for something I am thinking of doing....

Secondly, the big question:

What do you consider as Legendary Racing Simulations?

Mine personally would be:

Indy 500 the simulation, Indycar Racing 2, NASCAR Racing 2, Grand Prix 2,
Grand Prix Legends.

That is my own personal opinion, and please when you answer say why it is
'classic' or 'legendary.'

Also, including sims like F1RS is a little vague, they set no new ground in
racing sims, and are therfore not so much of a groundbreaker.

If you have large comments, feel free to email them to me:

Many Thanks,

Tim

Okay, Geoff Crammond did the first F1 racing simulation with
F1 grand prix (first for Amiga). It was amazing. Later (June 1996)
he topped himself with GP2.

In summer 1998 there appeared GP Legends, which set a new
standard for realism in computer sims.

Those are the legens and classics.

None of them qualify, in my opinion.
Have a look in any dictionary for the literal meaning of the word "legend".

Nascar 1, It started the whole craze with its record sales. First time I was
wowed by graphics was with GP2, First physics that blew me away were GPL.

Go back further!

Does anyone remember these "accolade"-"sims"?
#88 was the one to beat.
I had the F1-game on a PC and the motorcycle-game on a Mac-Classic!!!

Has anyone done done a lap under 1 min with the 500 cc at the
Salzburgring?

A friend of mine, who showed me the accolade-F1-game was enthusiastic
about the mirrors, which he considered to be a crucial step to reality.
(Think about this, when opening threads about reality in new sims ;-).)

I would vote for the Accolade-motorcycle-Sim, because your engine was
blown
in sixth gear
in the 125 cc-class, if you had the perfect-line through a set of curves
at Suzuka ;-)

Hmm, I disagree....F1RS was the first sim with a "roostertail" and
dynamic weather. The fog was overdone, I remember I was lost
on the secundairy roads at Silverstone a few times.... <g>

The first ever sim that really caught my attention was a game called Revs
for the BBC; based on Formula 3 racing I think. If I recall it was written
by some chap called Crammond.

I would also like to volunteer a game as the legendary worst ever racing
sim. It was so bad that it deliberately defied the laws of physics and made
the computer cars catch up with you on the last lap; even if you were almost
a whole lap ahead. Sadly, like a bad dream, the name of the game has been
wiped from my memory!

Legendary Simulations (kinda a survey)

On Tue, 18 Apr 2000 03:43:27 +0100, "Tim Wheatley"

<SNIP lots of good Tim Wheatley stuff>

In chronological order I would have to start with The Cycles by
Accolade and the F1 game that came out at the same time also by
Accolade. (1988??) Both truly amazing (graphics, sound) and also the
games that convinced me to stop playing games on Apples and Nintendos
:-)

Next up would have to be Indy 500. Stunning graphics and sound (it
came bundled with my original 8 bit sound blaster.)

NASCAR racing was the next game that caught my attention. (HI-Res!!
WOW!!)

I only ever saw F1GP running once and that was about two months before
GP2 came out. So I would have to say that F1GP was not a great
influence to me. But GP2 on the other hand, Fan-F***ing-tastic. Never
forget my first race using the keyboard at monza when a certain M.
Schumacher sent me flying. The only reason that I have stopped playing
it is that my dodgy sound card won't work in DOS.

I tried other sims after GP2 but none of them really caught my
imagination until the fateful day that I logged onto RAS and saw all
these posts about a new Papy game. I thought sounds interesting. Then
I found out it was just the demo everyone was talking about. "How can
this be?? There are so many posts about it. It must be truly amazing."
So I headed off the gpl.gamestats.com and spent the next hour
downloading.

I only finished the D/L at about 1:00 am that morning and could only
spend one hour that night playing it... and i don't remember
completing one single lap let alone one sequence of corners!!! The
next morning I woke up to find that my hard drive had crashed and it
was another week before I once again experienced the joy that is GPL.
As soon as it hit the stores in AUS I owned it and have enjoyed
countless hours since.

And it is interesting to note that out of all the sims I have
mentioned above it and GP2 are the only ones still residing on my
system.

As of late I have trying to recapture the feeling that GP2 and GPL
have both given me without much success. I would say that GP500 is the
only sim that has come close but I am also a completely crazy
Motorbike nut.

Honorable mentions must go to Stunts (4D Sports Racing in US AFAIK)
and NFS:SE 1. Both games that actually kept pulling me back towards
them.

I think this has turned out a bit longer than I had originally planed
and i'm begging to get all nostalgic.

Time To End.

p.s. Congratulations if you managed to hold out till here :-)

thanks for the opinion, i was overshadowed by gp2 i guess, but i'm getting
some great feedback here! this is cool!

Ok Tim here ya go !    First 'real' racing sim I tried was F1GP..  the atari
version...hell, we was using the atari to run cubase.. 'another legend'...
actually bought a pc to run F1GP2.....  and then there was ICR2    .... ooer
missus!    Toca 1 was quite nice..given that it was front wheel drive..and
cars with front wheel drive defy the laws of physics ! lol ... but it was
great to be able to 'drive' those tracks.. Oulton park was especially nice
with lens flare and all!  Got nascar2, after that , then GPL.... ( I
hesitate to mention the 'non-runners' some kinda racing simulation series..
For me the standout sims must have accurate tracks, physics
that are fairly realistic..given what is possible at the time.. and please
no more  murray walker!

I'll let you know what I am planning on doing...

Planning on doing a timeline/history on GOOD simulations/games, the ones
people remember for certain reasons, i'm planning on doing a page for each,
giving details about how groundbreaking it was, what was 'run of the mill'
and other such stuff, for indy 500 for example, it had wireframe graphics
which are still amasingly used today in papyrus simulations (the wireframe
surfaces are texturised now though), this is why i need good quotes from you
guys too, the e-mails i've recieved have been great, one of them is
basically going to get quoted in whole ;o))
