Egah! Reinstalling GPL please help

by ymenar » Mon, 07 Oct 2002 07:35:31

After all those years, I've figured that it's about time I reinstall GPL.
It's often crashing, mostly resulting in the software being overloaded with
tons and tons of add-ons.  It's like building an inversed pyramid, you keep
putting stuff on top of it and sometime it collapses ;)

So there, here's my plan.  I just want to know if I'm forgetting something.

- Install GPL (duh!)
- Get the 1.2.0.1 Patch
- Get the D3D Patch
- Get the Disco Patch
- Get the CPU Patch
- Setting the FF and core.ini stuff for online racing

Now this gives me a "basic" standard up-to-date GPL, no?

All that is left, is the various add-ons.  Sounds (the patch that enables
all different sounds), the fix that puts the Honda and the Cooper, GPLEA
cars, Graphical update to tracks, and new tracks.  Oh yeah and VROC' of
course.

iirc the disco patch is included in the cpu fix, so you don't need to do it
separately. So's the no CD patch I think.

Just save & restore your current core.ini and driver.ini.

That's a pretty big "all" ;-) but yup, that'd do it.

Of course this all assumes your original CD will still work. Mine doesn't
any more :-(

Sweet, I'll archive all those "basic" patches on my HD now.

Indeed, I will "restore" the most stuff possible.

ouch!  Why is that?  Somehow, my GPL CD only served 3 perhaps 4 time in all
it's life.

Just a scratch on it I think, but it's four years old, so it's not that
surprising I guess. Mine's not had much more use than yours.
It reads okay, but comes up with a 'this is not a genuine CD' when you try
to re-install. I burned a basic install to CDr & I use that when I need to.
If you're feeling paranoid, it might be work making a huge zipfile of your
gpl folder as a backup until you've re-installed successfully, but you'll
probably be fine. Just delete the backup once you know you have it back &
working.

Nah :)

I'm awaiting NR2003 until I get any new PC or hardware.

Did the 'not a genuine CD' thing not happen on systems with 2 CD/DVD drives?
I seem to recall that the problem went away when using the other drive to
the one that gave that error.
Just a thought.

iirc it wouldn't work in either (CD or CD-RW) last time I tried but I've
since replaced the CD with a DVD & I haven't tried it in that.
I haven't needed to use the CD in well over a year, but I'll bear that in
mind next time I reinstall, thanks.

It's only paranoia when there's nothing real to fear. ;-)
