N2 renddma problems

by R. Dewey Thoma » Sun, 21 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I recently posted that I was having trouble getting my T2 wheel to
calibrate in rendition mode with a new Canopus 3D card.  I worked around
the problem by creating a dos boot disk instead of running N2 under win
95.

However, I can run N2 with rendition now in dos but cannot run the
rendition with the -dma switch.  My question is... will I get better
performance with the -dma switch (less jerky car movements)... and if so
how do I get renddma to recognize that I have the proper video card to
run N2 in that mode (the error says maybe no vesa).

Thanks

It would appear that your MB BIOS is not turning on the DMA portion of
your PCI when booting to DOS (Win95 does this).  Go to Eric Busch's web
site and get the program DMADIAG
<http://ebusch.akorn.net/utilities.html>.  This is a diagnostic tool,
but turns on the DMA before it test.  Just run this as part of your
AUTOEXEC.BAT on your boot disk.  Then you should be able to get the -dma
switch to work.

DMA switch gives you 30 fps with all details on :)

On my system the renddma only works from "reboot to dos" option in the
windows 95 shutdown dialog.  It does give noticable improvements.  I
can turn on/off various graphic features with no apparent frame rate change.

This is the same method used to run ICR2.  So, apparently ICR2 depends
on the DMA mode.

N2 renddma problems

I experience the same effect on my system and I'd love to know
the reason why.

I have the Creative Labs 3D Blaster PCI on an Elite P5HX-B
Motherboard.

I can confirm that I observe the same with both ICR2 and N2.

All I can think of is that the Windows 95 drivers do a better job
of initialising the graphics card for fast DMA operation than the
Papyrus drivers do.

Anybody any ideas ?

It's your motherboard BIOS that is not turning on the DMA transfer
portion of the chipshet.  Win95 does this.  DOS does not.  Some BIOS's
do, some do not.  Get the DMADIAG program and this will turn this
feature on for you from a pure DOS boot.
