N2 / renddma not in DOS 6.22

by Michael E. Carv » Sun, 22 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Well I have tried all of the tips to get NASCAR2 to run renddma in DOS
6.22.  It will work if I go to DOS via a PIF I constructed from Win95.
I get the following error message when trying it in 6.22:

RN1 Error: Could not map linear pointer to physical

Intergraph says it's a Papyrus/Sierra problem to solve.

I am currently running it on a P5-166 in a Tyan Tomcat 1 (rev. 4)
mobo w/Award BIOS 4.51 (TYN 3.02) and 16 meg of memory.  I can't seem to
find any "PCI busmastering/DMA" options in the BIOS setup.  When I run
DMADIAG I get around 22.0 mb/sec for FIFO and 39.5 for DMA.  This seems
a little low.  Could this be the problem.  I assume that Win95 maybe
somehow using the PCI busmastering but DOS 6.22 ain't.  I don't know I
am confused.

BTW:  Indyfast runs fine if I run DMADIAG first.  Go figure...

Now here was my clue and I missed it.  I am now able to run NASCAR2 in
dma mode by setting the same system variables set by INDYFAST.  I edited
the renddma.bat to include the following:

set SPEEDY3D=E:\SIERRA\NASCAR2
set SPEEDY3D_DMA=1

I then run dmadiag before running NASCAR.

Seems to work now in DOS 6.22 or Win95's DOS 7

DMADIAG remaps the video display, not unlike resync.  The Rendition
card uses Win95 virtual drivers, so when you run from here (or
psudo-DOS) the drivers remain intact.  If however, you reboot to DOS,
you loose the virtual drivers, and need to run DMADIAG to set things
right again.  This only occures on a few mb though.

Okay, I fooled myself.  This is not what I did to fix the problem.  Even
though I thought it was.  This whole problem seems tied to PNP/PCI in
the BIOS setup.  The trick is to allow the proper IRQ's & DMA's open to
use by PNP/PCI.  I have since gone back through and only marked my
Legacy IRQ's & DMA's for legacy use and the rest to PNP/PCI.  Now DMA
works in both DOS 7 & 6.22.  Setting the system variables or running
dmadiag are not necessary for NASCAR2.  I guess there is enough PNP
control built into DOS 7 to allow for errors in the BIOS PNP settings.

I didn't think what you did would have changed anything.  The
renddma.bat already forces Nascar2 into DMA mode, so the set
SPEEDY3D_DMA=1 line would have been redundant.

N2 / renddma not in DOS 6.22

I too have same problem, Can't run either the indycar 2 or nascar2 in
dma mode. Reading all this stuff here about it in your bios. Even with
the book on my Motherboard ,I still see no mention of it at all.
This is newer MB,thought It might do this,Triton 430fx chipset.
So what am I doing wrong here.Did get it work same way, by going to
eric's page and getting the dmadiag file and run that first. Then it
says  about same as yours. After I do that I can run all the graphics
in ICR2 at 30 fps constant with a lowley P90, Just like they say on
renditions home page. I also have the award 4.50g bios? Any
suggestions, tips, help? I thank you in advance for any info you guys
may offer. BTW So far its been a love hate deal with this card.
In a 3d game using dmadiag, Its great ,works like they say it should.
But in Dos, In windows. My Mudduck ATI Mach64 which I already consider
slow, eats it alive no matter what I test it with. The numbers are
lower each and everytime with the reactor card than they are with my
old mudduck ati with 2 megs of Dram. As far as normal Nascar1
indycar, duke and all that, No noticable change between the two cards
at all. Anyone else notice this? or is it just me?
