New Graphics Card

I'm a little out of touch with this whole area, but I was thinking of
getting F1 2001 and I guess it's time to upgrade the old Voodoo 3. What a
good graphics card replacement in the $100-$150 US range? I would want to
play F1 2001, GPL, GP3 and a few other similar things. If it makes any
difference, the specs are:

PIII 500
256 MB ram (thinking of getting more)
Turtle Beach Montego II
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP

Also, would upping the CPU to a PIII 850 make much of a difference?

Thanks a lot, and sorry to bring up this old question again.

A GeForce2MX would probably be a good fit for your current system.

That said, the processor upgrade would be very beneficial, since both GPL
and GP3 are more dependent on CPU speed than the graphics card.  If you were
to upgrade the CPU, you could probably upgrade to a GF2 (either a current
card or the just-announced Titanium) and see an even bigger performance
jump.

I agree, you wouldn't get much more if you went to a GF2 GTS or
better. An MX card would be a good match. I'd probably go with the
second option and get a CPU and video upgrade together, and get a GF2
GTS, Pro or Ultra. Racing sims always need plenty of CPU power,
especially if you race offline a lot.

I don't believe an MX is a worthwhile upgrade from a V3 - especially for
GPL. I've tried one and sent it back- the framerates were worse in several
car sims than the V3's. A much better vid card for GPL is the Kyro II, but
it has problems with GP3! If you can live without this sim then the Kyro
runs most other things well. For a limited budget, perhaps a processor
upgrade would be a better way to go and keep the V3 until GTS cards are
cheaper (shouldn't be too long!)
 Just my 2 Pacific Peso's worth :-)

I have a GF2-MX400 with 64mb and it runs GPL and GP3 very
nicely.  I mention this because my system specs are very similar

P3-550e/256mb/fortissimo2

A friend has a straight GF2-MX with 32mb and it tends to suffer
with games that use lots of detailed or different textures (Nascar4
seems to be noticably less choppy on the "bigger" card at highest
detail) but GPL and GP3 won't be that dependant on texture
memory.

P3-500's weren't coppermine chips (bigger but slower and less
accessible cache amonst other things) which means there would be
appreciable performance gains with a CPU upgrade.

Phillip,

Yes, but the original question had to do with getting a card to work with
F1-2001, which the V3 doesn't.

A Geforce2 GTS. The MX is ok, but the GTS is in your price range so
get the better card. Use the 12.90 non-WHQL drivers and you will be
good to go to run every game you listed.

Thanks a lot everyone. Some good advice. I think I'll go with the 850 as
well as a GeForce GTS or MX. I'll look into priced here in Toronto.

You will fiond good prices for computer equipment in Toronto  at
Pacific Mall at Steeles and Kennedy. There are two stores there with
very good prices, Canada Computes and Sunny Computer. CC has a store
elsewhere too but can't remember the address.
