F1 200x mods and tracks: status report.

The mod scene for F1 2001 and 2002 is really exploding right now.
Recently 2 new mods for F1 2001 have been released, and they have also
patched the LeMans track to bypass the two chicanes on the Mulsaane, so you
can sortof simulate the years prior to the chicanes...(the Porche curves and
Ford Chicane are still there tho)  AND....I've just seen on the SSM forum
that LeMans is being updated again with the addition of the esses added just
after the Dunlop bridge.  These new turns were first used this past year
during the 2002 Le Mans 24 hours.
There are several single car Mods for F1 2002 available, the First of
several sportscar mods has been released(SSM--with more updates on the way)
and Several other groups are working on Touring car mods, both DTM and BTCC
and more.  The number of tracks doesn't rival GPL's huge number but it is
growing.  And Simbin's next Sportscar mod for 2002 should be out within a
few weeks, with more new tracks and cars.  Yummie!
I barely have time to practice for the Bullrun 1000, and all  these mods
keep whispering to me... :)

My personal favourite is the FIAGT V3 mod, and I cannot wait to
race those monsters on the Nordschleife sporting f1 2002
physics..

What I would really like to see from the f1 200x mod community
is a mod for decent online play with more than three players.

Would this be possible in any way?

Also, what about the followup to rally trophy? Will it support
internet play, and if so, how many players, and will it be free
of gamespyware and sport a dedicated server mode?

Cheers,

uwe

Such a mod is conceptually possible, although it would be a lot of work.
If the problem is just bandwidth (and I'm not sure about that, it sounds
like there are prediction issues also) what it would take to fix it is a
proxy that uses a more efficient network encoding scheme.  IOW each
player would have to run the proxy on their machine; they connect to the
proxies and the proxies connect to each other on the net.  The clients
send a data stream to the proxy which gets converted to a more compact
encoding before being sent across the net.  These kinds of things are
not impossible, people have been monkeying around with Quake proxies
almost since the day of its release.  But it's a huge amount of work
because you first have to sniff out and reverse engineer the data that
the program is sending, then come up with some more efficient way of
doing it.

We have been testing the mods online and while they in NO WAY come close
to the numbers Papyrus can run or even Nascar Heat, we have achieved very
solid results with 8 drivers on an ASDL line.  We have been trying to get a
T3 line(actually have a guy who has acess, just not the time to test it)  to
see if we can get MORE users online.
The key so far for smooth racing is to make sure everyone connects at the
same data rate.  We shoot for the 56k connection and that's for everyone,
even the cable and ADSL users.  If the host and all drivers connect at 56k,
it makes the driving very good online.  Still, like I said, it is nowhere
near Papyrus' level.

Darn, I was hoping someone had finally compiled a list of all available mods and
patches with their coresponding links...

I'd like a modern F1 mod, 2002 or 2003 season, preferably.  Something
with realistic brake, downforce, and TC modelling and the real tracks
that they race on (as opposed to the ones that shipped with the game).
Increasing the fidelity of the suspension/tire model or removing the
high-frequency bumps that the physics engine clearly wasn't designed
to handle would be a plus.

After that someone could do a NASCAR mod if there's any demand for it.
