My first impressions on GPL !!

eh, eh, i finally buy this sim at budget price (around $13 ) because
of all of you who say every day that it's the best sim ever.
I receive the game box from the mailman just after i finish my work and go home.
I open the box, found a very big user manual with driving advices, very cool !!
Then, i install the game, start it and..........the game was ugly.
So i went in the "options menu", and unfortunately saw that my video card (ATI

wasn't supported.
But i remember that i saw in a web site some patches for GPL.
I downloaded 2 patches: the 1.2 version of the game and the D3D exe.
Ahhhhhh, the game now looks better because i can increase the resolution to 1280
X 1124.
but i did 1024 X 768.
Then, i choose a car, the Scuderia Ferrari (because of the beautiful steering
wheel :-) and start a quick race,
South Africa. After 5 laps for learn the game physics, i start the GP.
Dammm, this car has no brakes or what ?!? It takes a very long distance to stop
my car but i love this feeling.
I think i wasn't not so bad because i was 5th on 6 after my first 3 laps but
unfortunately the 6th and last car overtaked
me in the corner 4 and, after i tried to re-overtake it in the next corner, i
brake too late and do a 780 degree spin and
crach my car into a wall !!  This game is difficult but you have to be very
concentrated to do a GP. A real sim......

But i have some critics:
1): only two camera views when we race. Why not the great "over helmet" view
that i saw in the little replay screen in the menu ?
2): because the exterior view is so arcade and undrivable, i only race in
***pit view but we don't have any "numbers", like in exterior
view, like speed, ........We can't know our actual speed, gear or lap time. For
a sim, it's pretty weird, uh ?
3): A very boring stuff happened and i can't resolv it.
I have a PIII 450, 128 RAM and a ATI 16 Mo but when i race, in the start and
during the first lap, i have a frame rate number around 38-40
fps but after 1 or 2 lap, it continuously decrease until to 10 fps and even 5
fprs !!!!!!   Then, the game becomes unplayable.
If some1 had the same problem, please tell me how to fix this annoying problem.

<snip>

There is some way to activate the rollbar view for driving, I'm sure
somebody can tell you how, but if you want to go "real sim", stay in the
***pit.

Not weird, but realistic. '67 F1 cars didn't have speedometers, I don't even
know if they have them now. But you don't need a speedometer, after some
practice you will be able to tell your speed from the sound depending what
gear your in, and if you want to analyze a lap, you have the speed in the
replay.
You can tell the gear you're in by looking on the H-shifter to the right,
but with some practice you won't need this also, because you'll simply know
what gear you're in.
Note, that the lap time you're getting after completing a lap is the one
from the previous lap (well, the guys need a lap to write it on the board
:-))

problem.

??? Haven't heard of this one. The framerate is capped at 36, so the max
readout should be 36-37. With your system you should be able to get a
constant 36 except at the start, where it should drop to somewhere in the
mid twenties, depending on resolution and detail setting.
Do you have any background tasks running, like MS Office's FindFast? If so,
kill them when playing GPL, I have no idea, what else could be the culprit
for your dropping fps.

Erwan,
If you have skid marks turned on your frame rate will drop drastically every
lap.  I run on a
P 233 ( no online racing ) and can keep the framerate up only by turning
down detail and as many graphic options as possible.  If you stick with it
and tweak for consistent performance, you may become ***ed like the rest
of us!

I believe most, if not all, 1967 cars lacked a speedometer. Drivers
prefer the engine speed. You know the actual gear you're in by looking at
the gearbox to your right (or left in a BRM, I think). Lap time is shown on
the pit boards on the next lap (in training/practice mode). All these things
aim for realism, and therefore it's not "pretty weird" for a sim. Pretty
rare, maybe :)

It's very useful. A lot of references incomprehensible to non-
Americans, though (has *anyone* in the UK heard of Alois Ruf???)

Aha. Looks like we have another victim ;-)

<snip>

This "6th and last car". It wasn't white, was it? If so, it was one
John Surtees, and the only sensible advice is "avoid! avoid!",
especially at the Parabolica (last corner at Monza).

There are ways to change this, and there are other views available (see
elsewhere in this thread). But I think these are a little unfair,
especially in online races. Stick with the***pit view - you even get
road noise!

Nope. It's a sim. Whihc is to say, a simulation. So it does (more or
less) what the real car did. And 1967 F1 cars don't have speedometers.
In any case, you don't need it to drive - the rev counter is the main
thing, and once you get good you'll make most of your decisions on the
engine noise alone.

I had this once, but only once, and I can't remember what was causing
it. If all else fails, reinstall GPL.

With your computer Gpl is going to run smooth in 800x600 IMHO.

But I try all resolutions (640X480, 800X600, 1024X768) and the problem is still
the same. Every time, i have 38 fps at start and around 10 fps after 1 lap.
Weird !!
