Has anyone here tried both the Audigy 2 and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz in the
same *** machine?  I would really like to hear how they compare in terms
of performance, quality, and compatibility.  This would be for an XP system.

I had em both.  The Santa Cruz was always stable and sounded ok.  I put
in the A2 and it does sound better and has less cpu utilization.  As
typical with Creative though support and the apps that come with the
audigy really suck :)  I probably wouldnt do the upgrade again unless
you can find a good deal on an A2.

system.

Unless you want ASIO compliance, I'd not bother with the Audigy. Creative
invariably has compatibility issues with various chipsets (VIA especially),
and the sound quality isn't as good as they'd have us believe.

My Audigy 2 and my VIA chip set don't get along. As soon as I installed the
A2 XP Pro wouldn't restart anymore.

I dumped Creative SoundBlaser Live's about 3 years ago for the TBSC, and
I've been quite happy with it.    The card is far more trouble-free than any
Creative card I've ever used, and it plays nice on the PCI Bus.

However, Turtle Beach seems to have lost interest in us lately and that is a
damned shame.  The best drivers (for NR2003 at least) are the 4161s set.
There are later "Release Candidate" drivers but they haven't been touched
since June of last year.

The TBSC with 4161s drivers is one of those install and forget it things.
It'll never bug you.  But, since everyone's computer is different, I must
add the proverbial YMMV :)

I'm looking at the Revolution 7.1, and I'm hearing that it's a great card
but really *** game Frame Rates.

The Hercules GameTheatre XP is based on the same reference hardware as the
TBSC, but I haven't looked to see what Hercules' status of that setup is
lately.

Creative has pissed me off so bad in the past that the Audigy2 is literally
the very last card I'll consider.

Don't compare a SB Live to an Audigy2.  Like you the SB Live is what
prompted me to get the TBSC.  I was happy with the Santa Cruz too until
I popped in an Audigy2.  Lower processor occupancy and much better
sound.  2 things that just can't be beat in a *** rig.

That being said Creative's software bundle is crap.  Driver updates has
also been an issue in the past but the current driver is absolutely rock
solid stable.

Believe me Creative has REALLY pissed me off before also but youre
missing out on a damn good sound card.  In a way theyre just screwing
you again cause youre missing out on a good card because of past issues.

Pull the A2 and put it into a different PCI slot or enable ACPI and
re-install XP.  Check VIA/Creative support for known incompatibilties.  I
would avoid VIA based mobo's to a much greater extent than any Creative
product ever, including the Live :)

Not for everyone. As those still suffering from the dreaded Audigy/Audigy2
"squeal of death" will testify.

Also worth noting on this group that GPL, Win98 & Audigy2 causes stuttering.

Mitch,

Just curious what OS, mobo chipset, and CPU you are using.  Seems like a lot
of these cards are very configuration sensitive.  Also, can you use the
original sounds in GPL without distortion?

Larry,

I would like to ask you the same thing I asked Mitch.  What OS, mobo
chipset, and CPU are you using?  Also can you use the original sounds in GPL
without distortion?

You have been found guilty by the elders of the town of uttering the name of
our Lord, and so, as a blasphemer,...
Ooooh!
..you are to be stoned to death.
Ahh!
Look. all I said to RAS was, 'Havent had GPL loaded on any of my past 4-5
boxes'
Oooooh!
Blasphemy!
He's said it again!
Yes! Yes, he did! He did!...
Did you hear him?!
Yes! Yes, we did! We did!...
Really!
[silence]
Are there any women here today?...

ABIT IT7-Max2.  P4 2.53 (533).  Intel i845 I think is what this one has.

I haven't had GPL loaded in a long time, but I don't really recall any sound
issues.  GPL was never squeaky clean in any config and always has had a bit
of upper-register noise to it.

WinXP Pro.
