Grand Prix Legends Replay Project

For the last days I've been studying how hard it would be to build an open
source GPL replay file player. I've made some progress (and unfortunately
there is still quite a much work to do), and so I decided to release current
sources for everybody to look and try. The diary (and obligatory screen
shots) for the project can be found in http://www.racesimcentral.net/
(unfortunately the older parts are written in the most famous language in
the world (=finnish), but you do not need to understand it, just browse
through the pictures :)

From there, you'll find the link for the main site where all the goodies
lie.

There are many known problems, some are generated by different
OpenGL-variants and I'm not John Carmack, so help would be appreciated,
especially on the Voodoo3-area.

And if you got some neat OpenGL-accelerated Unix-box (SGI, Sun, anything),
please join to the project, it would be way cool to see GPL replays on those
machines.

This looks really promising! With this replay tool, you would be able
to change the cam angles to any point when watching a replay?
I hope someone with the necessary skills can finish this tool....

Jack Rambo maybe? <G>

Although I don't understand a single word there, I'm assuming this
thing is an extra application for viewing the replay out side of GPL?
Another wards, Someone who never heard of GPL can download a replay and
this application and watch the replay (no GPL on the HDD)?

*If* that was the case, This application would be widely used as not
only an introduction to GPL, but also could be used as a promotion for a
driver and or team:)

And it would make an awesome screen saver. A great way to promote GPL to the
masses.

What advantage would this approuch have over creating .mpg(s) from GPL replay
files?

There already is program called something like GPL MovieStudio that makes frame
images from the replay clip and generates an .mpg.

If I could read the page I'd probably understand what it is that he's
trying to build.  If it is what I thought it might be, then the
advantage is overly obvious.  No conversion needed and I believe the
replay files are smaller then mpg.

But again, without being able to translate it... I don't know what he's
building.

Yes....MUCH smaller, judging from my (not so big) experience
with them so far.

Since Tiku himself hasn't responded, I might as well.

Replay Player will work as a means to view a GPL replay file. GPL Movie
Studio was also developed by Timo Kujala. But since creating mpeg files is
time-consuming, troublesome and the files are huge compared to gpl replay
files Timo is trying to develope Replay Viewer.

Replay Viewer will require GPL to be installed on the viewer's machine! It
uses GPL's *.dat files for tracks, cars, textures etc. It won't work on a
machine without GPL.

Please note that RV might never be completed, although I fully believe
Tiku's capabilities to finish it. Especially if he gets help from any of you
guys!

So the possible advantages over just running GPL are that perhaps you
could run it windowed on a desktop.  Other than that, why bother?

It would be very nice if we could position the camera anywhere during
a replay and  making fly-by cams...

well, It's not completely what I thought it was then. Bummer.  But the
concept sounds interesting!  If all the x.dat files could be squashed
down to the minimum and sent along with that RV application.. then
maybe, possibly... it could be used as a stand alone application.

Just thinking out loud.

Again this is not Tiku answering, but.. the code is hopefully
going to be portable, so that you could run it on any unix and
watch replays anywhere. You'd just need to copy those required
files from GPL to the new machine (stuff like tracks and cars etc).

Soooo... when will you be releasing your own-coded track editor Karl?
