NASCAR1: More memory?

by Sam » Wed, 02 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I have a 486dx2 80 with 12 megs of ram.  I would like to run nascar1
in SVGA mode without upgrading my cpu.  I can run SVGA now,  but it is
very choppy even with alot of things turned off. If I add lots of
memory would this help lets say bring it up to 36 megs total would
this improve my framerate.
Also I use Win95 and the way I do it now is hit f8 after boot and
select option 5 step by step config.  I bascally leave everything on
except my cd-rom drive.  Do I need to load himem.sys?  Is there an
easier way?

Thanks

Sam

All the additional RAM will do is give you longer replay files.  You will
be unable to run in SVGA at acceptable frame rates on your machine.  I have
a P120, and I choose to run in VGA because SVGA is still to choppy to me.

You need  VLB or PCI to make the frame rate better. It actually isn't
the cpu speed that is essential, it the ability of the cpu to move the
graphics thru the video card. A 16-bit video card is useless,
no matter the speed of the cpu. VLB is better, but PCI is probably the
best speed you can muster. I have 2 machines, an older Packard bell
P60 with VLB Mach 32 inboard. I now have a generic P133 with PCI
Diamond 64 stealth. Both have 16M of ram, and all but the grass
and asphalt texture turned on in SVGA. And the P60 is just noticable
with a large pack of cars in front of me.I usually have 14 front /
4 rear cars turned on. The p133 has no noticable slowup, even at
Sears Point or Bristol. Hope this helps

Nope.  More RAM will not improve frame rate.   Your documentation will
echo this fact.  A little reading will save you money.

I'm sorry to hear that.  :-)

Nope.  Try booting with nothing.   That may improve frame rate on your
DX2-80.   The biggest improvement you will see would be if you increased
your clock speed.   (Faster computer)   Next is video card. (PCI, VLB, etc)
