I've heard that it will work with v1.2, but I haven't tried it.
Type: nascar -n

Ethernet, yes... Internet, no, doesn't work.

Hi! It's me again. I just spent most all night trying to get this to work,
but I guess you have to have the *real* Netware to do it. It's a crying
shame that Apogee and ID can do it for a shareware game, but Papyrus
won't for this. I can understand the fact that it makes it easy for more
piracy to happen, but I own two copies, and can't play head to head anyways.
For those who missed the last round, I'm running Novell's Personal Netware,
and for some reason, Nascar always says "Net ID not found".
I also read about a change in the command to:

nascar -n:netidofopponent

This doesn't work, either, even if the opponent is logged into the server.
That brings up another question. Would the game have to be run *from* the
server that everyone logs onto, or is the local drive ok?

There is a program on the net (I think its called the 'Internet
adapter') that runs as a TSR and allows two people on the Internet who
have access to a login shell to play any head to head game that can make
use of a null modem cable. It basically just incrypts/de-encrypts the
data stream comming out of the serial port. I haven't tried it myself
but I know a lot of the DOOM guys use it and DOOM doesn't have any IP
capabilities build into it.

Go over to alt.games.air-warrior or comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim
and ask about IHHD (Internet Head-to-Head Daemon).  We use it to play
Air Warrior over the net, but only 2 players.  It beats long-distance
charges though.  Lag can sometimes be a pain too, and for something
like Nascar that has, like, walls and stuff, the lag might be
overwhelming.  I don't know the specifics... ask the experts.

It's been tried - Nascar and Indycar are way too demanding, even for
the fastest internet connetions. The delay times of packets are
too high for a decent connection. Flight sims need much less
accuracy in updating the acutal position of the planes - sometimes
you don't even see them, while Indycar for example knows car positions,
speeds, etc. every foot (12") of virtual racing surface. some of that
detail is already dropped in a modem link (that's why cars get a bit
jerky, but there's still a lot of data flowing that needs to be
received instantly for a realistinc simulation. IHHD is too slow
because the internet is clogged. I bet 4 years ago we could have
done it!
