Questions regarding hardware and NASCAR1

by Woodcock » Wed, 09 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hello all,

I know these are beginner-type questions, so please spare the flames.

Would anyone be so kind as to tell me how doing each of the following
would enhance my NASCAR experience:

   1) Upgrading the motherboard (I currently have a 486DX4/100);
   2) Upgrading the video card (I have a PCI 1MB card); and
   3) Adding RAM (I have 12 Meg at present)

I know doing all 3 of the above would be awesome, but which would be
best?  I'm mostly concerned in increasing the frame rate, then increasing
the detail.

Thanks!

Number 1 is the first choice, even though it will be the most expensive
(especially after you put in a new more powerful CPU).  The others will
not provide you with any improvements in frame rate or detail.  Well,
depending on the speed of your video card, you might see a minor
improvement.  But your motherboard/cpu is the "drag chute" in your
system.

preferably to a mid-range Pentium. Since (assuming) your graphic card is
not 3D specialized, increasing frame rate and graphic detail will be
processor intensive. Your 486 may take a heavy toll and still deliver
poor results. Your amount of RAM is fine, but why not go for 16mb? That
would be better.

Hope my comments help,

If you want to save money at first, put in a AMD 586/133 chip.
I put one in and clocked it at anywhere from 133, 150 or 160Mhz.
I can run Nascar with 38 cars and ALL details on.

You can get the AMD chip now for around $45

Everybody can run with 38 cars and all details on.  But what is you
frame-rate?  What version of Nascar are you running - Matrox, Edge,
3DBlaster?  There is no way in hell you are running standard Nascar with
all detail on any machine and getting close to 20fps, which should be
considered minimum acceptable performance.  I have a p166 512k cache 4mb
Matrox system and I have to turn off asphalt to stay over 20fps.  Are
you running in SVGA?  Tell the whole story.
