Viper Racing - can't get modem play to work

by Joseph S Garte » Sun, 03 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I consider myself a quasi-rocket scientist and brother am I stumped!

N2, N1999, HyperTerminal and Dial-up Networking all work just fine (the two
computers in question always connect and communicate appropiately).

The problem:  when either computer "dials out" (VR menu reads "Dialing"),
the modem dials, the other modem answers then absolute, complete silence
ensues until the modems disconnect (VR menu then reads "Unconnected"). No
screeching or squalling, no blinking lights (SD or RD). Tried it both ways
(swapping the dialing/answering computer/modem) and get identical results.
Been through every known modem property and setting: everything's kosher and
identical as near as i can tell! Here's the weirdest part: I cannot find any
modem  configuration stuff within the game to tweak! I can't play with modem
init strings or anything. I did find the C:\SIERRA\Viper
Racing\Config\Options.cfg file's [MULTI] setion but it's no help...

I've read about two possible resolutions in Sierra's Motor Sports Message
Board: 1) set both 16550 UART TX and RX buffers to their minimum settings
(highly suspect and something I'm not likely to try) and 2) "hide" the
TELEPHON.INI file (something to do with non-TAPI compliant devices) which
I'll try sometime tomorrow.

Any one got something else?
