system running again. I traced it to the AGP aperture size and all is well
now - almost. In my quest to find the solution I booted in safe mode and ran
Norton WinDoctor which cleaned up a few things in the registry, etc. nothing
dramatic.
I have 2 modems an internal USR 56K winmodem and an external 28.8 USR
Sportster. I use the external one for GPL-VROC at 26400 bps with all
settings as recommended by the experts. Anyway, now I have no access to Dial
Up Networking and my old shortcuts to the GPL modem have died. The DUN for
the other modem still works - Wierd... I even uninstalled and re-installed
DUN itself but I still can't get it to open.
But I found the old GPL DUN inside the Network config and defaulted the GPL
modem so I could trigger it to start up when I opened a network app. It
worked and getting into a race is no problem, but after about 10 minutes
give or take, the sound of the car's engine stops (although the Tach says
it's still running) and I can still hear my wheels screetch and other cars'
engines. Then about 20-30 seconds later my GPL modem kills the connection,
but my car still runs the track and I get a message saying something like
"10049: Problem with the network connection" and I get rising Q bar until it
boots me out a few seconds later.
At first I didn't think the sound and disco problem were related, but it has
happened 4 times in exactly the same way. BTW, most of those races were well
attended (12-19 drivers?). I dialed down the connect speed to 24000 bps, but
it didn't help.
I then tried a race with 5 other drivers with my winmodem at 49333 bps (not
VROC optimized - compressions on, etc) and all went well. ??!!!??
Anyway, I hope someone has some ideas, because I don't. Can't figure out how
the engine sound is tied to a connection problem. Or maybe that starts the
trouble...Should I just revert to the winmodem with VROC optimized settings?
