GPL Online problem

by Ray Bryde » Sat, 17 Feb 2001 13:19:33

After installing a new 64 Mb card, all hell broke loose trying to get my
system running again. I traced it to the AGP aperture size and all is well
now - almost. In my quest to find the solution I booted in safe mode and ran
Norton WinDoctor which cleaned up a few things in the registry, etc. nothing
dramatic.

I have 2 modems an internal USR 56K winmodem and an external 28.8 USR
Sportster. I use the external one for GPL-VROC at 26400 bps with all
settings as recommended by the experts. Anyway, now I have no access to Dial
Up Networking and my old shortcuts to the GPL modem have died. The DUN for
the other modem still works - Wierd... I even uninstalled and re-installed
DUN itself but I still can't get it to open.

But I found the old GPL DUN inside the Network config and defaulted the GPL
modem so I could trigger it to start up when I opened a network app. It
worked and getting into a race is no problem, but after about 10 minutes
give or take, the sound of the car's engine stops (although the Tach says
it's still running) and I can still hear my wheels screetch and other cars'
engines. Then about 20-30 seconds later my GPL modem kills the connection,
but my car still runs the track and I get a message saying something like
"10049: Problem with the network connection" and I get rising Q bar until it
boots me out a few seconds later.

At first I didn't think the sound and disco problem were related, but it has
happened 4 times in exactly the same way. BTW, most of those races were well
attended (12-19 drivers?). I dialed down the connect speed to 24000 bps, but
it didn't help.

I then tried a race with 5 other drivers with my winmodem at 49333 bps (not
VROC optimized - compressions on, etc) and all went well. ??!!!??

Anyway, I hope someone has some ideas, because I don't. Can't figure out how
the engine sound is tied to a connection problem. Or maybe that starts the
trouble...Should I just revert to the winmodem with VROC optimized settings?

The engine sound is also the first thing to go for me if I'm racing
late and forget my scheduled tasks. Scandisk cuts in if I haven't
cancelled it - the only effect I notice is a very quiet engine. So I
assumed it was a memory problem.
Dunno if that helps,

Ray,

I don't have an answer for you, but the exact same thing has happened to me a
few times lately - not the DUN problems, but the loss of only the engine sound
followed by the network connection error.

My system is fairly similar to yours -

Dell XPS-R  PII 400 MHz
128 MB RAM
Voodoo3 3000 AGP (I'm one driver revision off the latest, I believe)
Turtle Beach Montego I (Dell OEM version)
Win 98 original
DirectX 7.0A

I'm connecting via a US Robotics modem (not a WinModem) at 26,400.

This just started happening with no modifications to any hardware or drivers.

Let me know if you figure this out.

Hey, Ray,

I, for one, would be interested to hear how you cured (almost all) yer
problems with an aperature-size adjustment.  What was it before?  What is it
now?  (This same issue arose with B-17 II, and was cured by reducing the
aperature from 128 to 64 Mb).

Steve,

A while back someone had told me that increasing the aperture size would
help increase the framerate on GeForce (I think?) cards. I have a Voodoo 3
3000 AGP card, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try it. I did, and it didn't
hurt, but it didn't help either. My system CMOS only has 2 AGP aperture
settings 64 and 256 Mb. I left it at 256 and didn't have a problem until the
RAM upgrade which caused my system to hang at the end of the boot or within
2 minutes thereafter. It took me a while to trace it to my System.ini file,
specifically the line that triggered the display driver:

display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv

Then after some investigative work I figured out the AGP aperture was told
the vid card how much system RAM the card can use. Eureka! I switched it
back and things booted normally again. Except for the new problems described
below.

Cheers,

Ray
