VROC Server

Hi all,

I have been letting my second machine run a dedicated server on VROC for
the last couple weeks. Anyone race on it? Could I get some feedback on
it? Am I wasting my time hosting due to the possible crappiness of my
cable connection here at home?

The machine is right beside my newer puter, and I sometimes watch the
chat to see what is up. I see a lot of 'JoeSchmoe connected' followed
almost immediately by 'JoeSchmoe disconnected'. Is this me causing people
to disco or their connection or a combination?

Also, worse I think, is I see a race begin, and soon after *all* drivers
disconnect. I know turn one accidents are bad, but...

I would like to keep it going since it sits here most of the time unused
anyhow, but not if it causes grief to the drivers 'o VROC.

Comments/suggestions?

Thanks mucho

MRSisson

OMG

Twice in one week. I gotta get back to lurking, my Moronacy shines when I
post.

The server is/was S.W. Ontario 2.

I've seen your server but haven't logged on to it.  Pings were low as I'm
not to far away, in Hull.

My cable connection, with its 128k upload limit, will not allow me to host
more than 5 or 6 reliably. Maybe yours (Rogers I assume) is the same type.

I just sent myself a test email, 1.8meg large, and using DUMeters
stopwatch feature, the upload to the mail server clocked in at :

Total data transferred - 2,800 kB
Max transfer rate - 845.7 kbs
Average transfer rate - 344.7 kbs

Note : these are kilobits per second, not kiloBytes per second

Doesn't look to be capped, but I am no expert. Maybe uploads to the mail
server are different from 'regular' internet use? If so, does anyone know
how to test upstream bandwidth another way?

Just joined and watched a novice Monza race, and two laps in everyone was
disco'd.

The server is done, kaput, finito.

Once again, cable lets me down. I rue the day I got it.

MRSisson, looking for something better.

Michael,

While you're looking, come join a bunch of us from SW Ontario (and around
the world) in the old Compuserve GPL league (no longer on Compuserve) at
http://www.egroups.com/group/lgnds_league/info.html

I found the email servers to be slow in my area.  I've used ... ahem ..

it works well.  I get around 20-60K/s upload with the average 30-40K/s.
I was able to host full 19 driver races on my P200.

Jason.
