Guy wilson is running a permanent VROC racelist again, but due to various
ISP related reasons he doesn't have the same bandwidth as before. He is
hosting the racelist but cannot run a race-server at the same time. In order
to upgrade the connection he needs more cash than he can spend, so I am sure
there are many people who have used VROC over the past few years that would
be happy to make a donation towards the costs.

To make a donation for the VROC race list server please create a paypal
account http://www.racesimcentral.net/'s email addy:

NO credit card? send money orders to:
vroc, 372 nadine st, livermore, CA 94550.
Send no more than $24 to cover 2 years worth of vroc, but any donations are
welcome!

I'm sure some of you are asking why VROC doesn't just move the racelist to
another server, one of the many volunteer server offers we have had. Well,
apart from needing permission from the author to distribute the old racelist
server application, there are new things on the VROC horizon with which Guy
still wants to be involved in. Guy is in contact with the people who have
volunteered their servers for the racelist and we may end up with some kind
of multiple server setup in the future....

Anyone who wants to get in contact with Guy can do so at the email address
listed above.

I'll be honest and say that this is getting me down. Perhaps some
clever person could write "OpenVROC" or the like.

That doesn't take away from the gratitude I feel to those who set up
and run VROC, though. Is there a UK address to donate? Sending cash
thro' the Royal Mail is dodgy at best even for inland stuff.

Thanks Guy!  Hopefully the next version WSCroc? can work like the SETI
program so we could all pitch in a little bit of bandwidth.  Is VROC coded
in C?

On the legendscentral forum, someone from a UK ISP offered to host VROC for
free. I don't know the ins and outs of why the offer was rejected/not
considered though.

cheers

Racesim.net also offered.  Apparently getting the server source is an
issue and also Guy wants to keep hold of it for his own nefarious purposes
:)

Firstly, I fully believe in an open and honest policy with VROC, so I tell
it as it is. :o)

I don't know ALL the issues involved with distrubuting the Racelist server
application, but the way Guy explained it to me, the code is copyright and
not open-source, and could be used by inscruplulous people to make money for
themselves. I asked if the worry was about about people setting up their own
racelists and charging subscription fees but he said that wasn't the
problem. The problem is that the code could be hacked/stolen and used in
other applications, with no credit or remuneration being made to the
original author.

I'm sorry if people want the code made "open-source" but it simply isn't
going to happen. Thats all I know about the racelist server app distribution
issues. If you want any more info, you'd better contact Guy Wilson about it,
or Alison Hine (who probably knows everything there is to know about the
subject).

Now onto the interesting bit... rumours and speculation... these are the
"fragments" that I have heard from trustworthy sources...

There is a new VROC being planned. A bigger VROC. A better VROC. A VROC that
will have racelists for N4 and WSC as well as GPL. This new VROC is being
planned to use multiple race-list servers, one of which will be Guy Wilsons.
Other people who volunteered their servers for VROC have/will be contacted
(Peter Burke (Speedcentre) and Piers (Racesim.net) have already been in
discussion with Guy about this. I believe that Alison Hine is also
involved). I guess this means a new VROC app is on the cards or something.

Rest assured I only have the interests of the GPL community at heart. I was
pushing like mad for the racelist server app to be given out. But with the
"bigger picture" of the future of VROC and all the stuff that was going on
in the background I think things are progressing in the right direction for
now.

Don't ask me any more, I have told you everything I have heard!!

GPL, N4, and WSC all in one spot - sounds like home to me!  Muchas gracias to the folks working on this one, if it's so.  Seems like
a good time to intro it might be right around the release of the third member of that trio, eh?  ;-)

I hope you appreciate how much I... er... appreciate it :-)

A shame, but I've accepted that for ages, and I really have no problems
with it. I don't believe in telling people that they "must" make their
code free - it's like telling Sierra they "must" make the GPL code
free! Silly.

What I meant by "OpenVROC" was a more-or-less *compatible* app, with
(to stretch the analogy to breaking point) the same relationship to
current VROC that WINE has to Windows. I suppose if any of us cared
that much (and had the ability), we could write such a rival racelist
app. But, frankly, why? I can't imagine it being better than VROC. But
that's enough on that topic, I think...

...especially given your other comments, about a new VROC. Now *those*
are far more interesting! I'm *really* looking forward to that!

Now THAT's something to cheer me up.  99% of the N4 races on the sierra
servers have a ping 50ms outside whatever I can attain from australia.
Never seem to have problems with the Vroc race list.  (I know, vroc doesn't
speed things up but it'll offer somewhere else to race.)

BTW, after paying full price for GP3 and driving it once, full price for
Flight Sim 2000 pro and flying it tw-tw-tw-twice (sorry, but it's a damn
slideshow even on a P1000 at 800x600 with a GTS2) I'll certainly be waiting
several weeks before I even think about buying WSC after the release.  Been
disappointed one too many times.  (Oh, FS2002 is supposed to be the bee's
knees - great, but I want a refund on the bee's bum they sold me last time)

Cheers
Simon

Uh-oh - I saw movies of FS2001 and they looked stunning - but now I
wonder what kind of system I will need to run FS2002 :(
