** HELP!! Can't select COM4 for modem race... **

by Brad W Trawe » Sun, 02 Jul 1995 04:00:00

I know this has been discussed before, but I didn't pay attention...
Now that I have an external modem that I need to connect via COM4, I'm
having the same problem - in Indycar, the 'COM4' selection is darkened
on the screen and you can't select it.  In NASCAR, it scrolls through
COM1-3, but then back to 1.  And yet I'm using this modem right now to
type this message, so it appears to be installed correctly/ correct IRQ,
etc.  Does anyone know how to get it to recognize a modem on COM4 in
either of these games???  I need to know ASAP, I'm dying to do a few
2-player races again...

Thanks in advance,
-Brad

What version of the game do you have?
If you have version 1.2 try reinstalling JUST your NASCAR.EXE and
MODEM.CFG from your previous version.
No promises but you might find that it will work.
NASCAR 1.2 on some systems does not see all the COM ports.

Brad, this is a screwup in the 1.2 patch.  For some strange reason, v1.2
of NASCAR doesn't know that COM4 exists.  My modem partner had that
problem also; he had to switch his interal modem to COM3 for us to race.

That might work for NASCAR, but what about Indycar??  Anyway, it's not
such a huge concern now - the modem I was trying was one I had
borrowed from my friend, and I've returned it now.  I currently have
an internal 14.4 modem, and I'll be upgrading soon to a USR Sportster
28.8... after this experience, though, I'll make sure to get an
internal rather than an external modem, so I can put it on COM3
instead!

Thanks for your suggestions...
-Brad

Indycar Versions prior to 1.04 had a problem with modem play. If you have
an earlier version you can download the 1.04 patch from the Papyrus BBS.

You may check to see it your computer is seeing COM4.  If you run DOS's
MSD program it will tell you what ports you have available.  You may need
to load a driver for your modem inorder for DOS to see COM4.  I had the
same problem so I tried switching my modem to COM3 and lo and behold COM3
was not showing up.

Try it, it may help.

I had the same problem with Nascar and other communication programs. My
mouse is setup on COM1 and conflicts when I use COM3 for my modem. I am
setup on COM 4. I selected COM 3 in the NASCAR game and used the COM 4
IRQ. It works for me.
