Microsoft Precision Racing Wheel & Win2K

hi there.  i've got an Athlon 1.4, 512MB RAM, tons of harddrive space,
running fully patched Windows 2000 Pro.  i have issues with my MS Precision
Racing Wheel (non-FF) that i've been able to resolve before but seem to be
persisting right now.

the wheel originally installed fine, even though i was warned that i was
using win2k and the Sidewinder software was incompatible.  i installed and
played a few games for awhile and enjoyed the hell out of it.

then, inexplicably, the wheel disappeared from the Sidewinder control panel.
a few times i'd managed to get it working by uninstalling & reinstalling the
USB device itself and the Sidewinder software, and it seemed to fix it for
awhile.

now, however, no matter what i do, i can't get the frickin' wheel working
again.  nothing i do seems to detect it.  i've tried all my USB ports, which
i know work as i have a couple other USB devices that work fine through them.

any suggestions?  unfortunately, extensive USB troubleshooting is not
something i've had to do in the past.

Initiate a support contact with MS. Get them to send you the 4.0 sidewind
software for the wheel (not, as I found out, the same stuff that comes in
the FF2 joystick box). And wait for a while. On the bright side, it is free
shipping.

And no, it's not available for download on their site for some silly reason.
