Depends if you consider Grand Turismo (SCE) a racing sim or a driving sim,
really. It's not bad by any means, but it's not strictly a racing sim.
Colin McRae Rally is probably the best racing sim, or TOCA Touring Car (both
Codemasters/3DO in US)

I've read that the programing team for Gran Turismo have since found more
efficient code that would let the PSX compute more with less resrouces. A
prelude to GT 2?.. hmmmmm

TOCA is much better.
The Racing in F1 '97, is certtainly better than in GT, but the simulation
level is not.
Ridge Racer- any of them, better racing,
Gt really could have used a few more opponents.
It's either way to easy, to way to hard.
On the horizon, Ridge racer type 4 looks quite interesting.
And there is always Micro Machines V3, for the best PSX multiplayer game ever
;)

Keeping to "driving", GPL's physics seem superior. In GT, I can get
ridiculous top speeds (>150 mph) out of 130-150 hp, otherwise stock, cars. Not
possible. How they could miss on somerhing as easy to calculate as that, I
don't know.
As to fun, extremely subjective. I probably had more fun with GT than any PC
title as you win so readily and get to upgrade to such a wide range of cars in
GT. And the racing, while unrealistic, is a hoot.
