Depends if you consider Grand Turismo (SCE) a racing sim or a driving sim,
really. It's not bad by any means, but it's not strictly a racing sim.

Colin McRae Rally is probably the best racing sim, or TOCA Touring Car (both
Codemasters/3DO in US)

Gran Turismo is considered by many to be the best racing sim ever, on any
platform.  About the only thing that could come close is Viper Racing. You
can choose from 166 cars, and each one handles differently, and is totally
realistic.

In other words, plunk down the $129 for the Playstation, and $39 for Gran
Turismo.  It will be money well spent!  Besides, there are hundreds of other
great games on the PSX.

All I've played is Gran Turismo (it's why I bought the damned PSX!) and I
consider it almost great.  Almost in that it doesn't have a true***pit view
(no gauges, etc) nor damage.  It also has some obvious physics problems (accel
and top speed aren't well matched to the spec'd hp's and weights).  But it is
terrific nonetheless.  To the above point, I'd say it is excellent as a
driving sim, fair as a racing sim (due to only 6 cars/race and no damage).

I finally broke down yesterday and bought a steering wheel for my
PSX.. I figured while I'm saving up for a new Thomas wheel for the PC,
I could indulge a little.
Gran Turismo rocks no matter which way you slice it. It may not have
an in car view, and it leans towards arcade a bit, but it has a great
driving model and it's fun! I have'nt played Colin McRay Rally, but
for me that's the next on  the list. Need for Speed III is fun for
pure arcade action, driving through the country at night in a
lightning storm, and of course great replays.
For racing sims you can't beat the PC,,, but for just having a blast
the Playstation comes through just fine. (There are plenty of cornball
racing titles, it's a minefield out there, but the jewels in the pack
are worth the trouble.

have fun

A very solid, sturdy wheel and pedal set that will most likely last you a
lifetime. You can read all about them at http://soli.inav.net/~thomas/
I have had the TSW2 since April, and am very satisfied.
Please note, their for the PC. Not sure what it has to do with the
playstation topic, but for racing sims on the PC, mighty hard to beat the
TSW.

GT is by far the best racing sim on PSX.  In 97 it also boasts the game that
exploited the most out of the PSX.  I haven't really come across a better
racing simulation yet.  CMR Rally is ..ok.. and is probably the best rally
game around.

I've read that the programing team for Gran Turismo have since found more
efficient code that would let the PSX compute more with less resrouces.  A
prelude to GT 2?.. hmmmmm

Doesn't preclude the current GT being a poor *racing* sim, as the lack of
competitors provides.
It is however, easily the most realistic driving sim on the PSX

I haven't come across any PC driving simulator that is as realistic and fun
as Gran Turismo.  Please provide the list:

Racing wise:

TOCA is much better.
The Racing in F1 '97, is certtainly better than in GT, but the simulation
level is not.

Ridge Racer- any of them, better racing,

Gt really could have used a few more opponents.

It's either way to easy, to way to hard.

On the horizon, Ridge racer type 4 looks quite interesting.

And there is always Micro Machines V3, for the best PSX multiplayer game ever
;)

You aren't arguing the "racing" part, are you?

Keeping to "driving", GPL's physics seem superior.  In GT, I can get
ridiculous top speeds (>150 mph) out of 130-150 hp, otherwise stock, cars. Not
possible.  How they could miss on somerhing as easy to calculate as that, I
don't know.

As to fun, extremely subjective.  I probably had more fun with GT than any PC
title as you win so readily and get to upgrade to such a wide range of cars in
GT.  And the racing, while unrealistic, is a hoot.
