Whats gone wrong with the racing sim world?

by jame » Sun, 12 Jan 2003 07:56:42

I'm sorry if I'm ***ing, but I thought someone may be able to cheer me up
with some good news 'cos I can't find any info on the web about forthcoming
racing sim games.

Whats happened to the sim racing world?

We haven't had anything decent for ages now.  Papyrus seems to just churn
out Nascar sims every year or so which look v.slightly different from the
last one.  I thought the GPL game was great and was expecting more,
especially after everyone starting modifying it with later cars. No ICR3 and
no GPL2. Just Nascar2002, Nascar2003, Nascar2004 ad infinitum.  I can't even
get my ICR2 DOS Cd to work on XP!

All the sportscar games are rubbish, the last decent one being SCGT. West
were the big hope that sunk under the waves.  Empire even had the cheek to
release Total Immersion Racing which is like racing Scalextric!!

I thought GP4 was gonna keep my sanity, I played it to death like I did all
the previous ones for about 3 or 4 months.  Downloaded all the car updates
to make the drivers actually come from the current year (whens Crammond
gonna sign a current racing year licence?!) and then got bored and played
something else.  Usually when I come back to a GP game I find that the
homemade developers out there have hacked a bit more at the game and changed
all the other stuff like the track layouts and stuff so I can play the
latest circuits and all the chicanes that the FIA in their wisdom put in and
I can dream and race classic circuits instead of 2nd gear boring ones (like
original Zeltweg, Paul Ricard, etc.) but not this time.  Since I stopped
playing not much seems to have changed.

Has anyone got any good news for me. Is Codemasters IRL game gonna be an
arcade racing piece of cr*p or a proper sim (I think IRL was the most
exciting racing in 2002 even though I'm English and have been an F1 fan all
my life).  Have Papy changed their minds and decided to diversify from one
game?  Has someone out there modified GP4 lots and I don't know about it.
Has someone out there hired the West boys and made them finish that
sportscar game that we all loved the screenshots from?  Please......... or
am I doomed to play multiplayer first person shoot-em-ups for the rest of my
life using my 56k modem (I can't even play racing sim games online 'cos my
56k modem doesn't appear to be quick enough to cope with racing games and I
like in England where our crappy telecoms system can't cope with ADSL unless
your stood right next to the exchange).

On Fri, 10 Jan 2003 22:56:42 -0000, "james"

As the others have said, get youself a copy of F1 2002. There are
addons and mods galore for this. GTR 2002, the Turbo Mod, Alpha
Challenge, F1 '77, M3 Challenge and a bunch of others that are in
development as we speak.

Well, we aren't even going to have NR2004 from Papy, so enjoy things now
while they are relatively good...

First off kudos to SBDT !!
This is true that many mods are being developed, its more of a curse then
an assett imo. Instead of focusing on one mod and developing it to its
potential the focus always seems to get deverted to somthing else,
leaving the mod uncompleted. Too many people going in too
many directions with these mods.  GTR2002 is a good start
and has potential for something really great like GPL but time
will tell as it always has. In the meantime we must enjoy whats
available.  -------------- My .02
