Verite (reactor) monitor powerdown problems fixable by bios?

by Peter Ashl » Sat, 16 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I just got a new verite based reactor and am reasonably happy so far.  Icr2
and vquake8 are AWESOME, D3D performance is greatly enhanced, windows 2d speed
seems faster than my 2 year old #9 GXE Pro (64 bit, VRAM), installation was
fine, don't care about vga.

But I'm having a problem with my monitor powering down and/or my system
locking up when playing flight unlimited (non-accelerated) and fighter
duel (net version in win95) (This game I can't do without).  I understand this
is a known issue, and I can wait a while if it will be fixable in a BIOS
update.  But if it's not, then I'll have to send it back.  Does anyone know if
rendition/intergraph is definitely committed to fixing this in BIOS?

Yes, it is fixable through the BIOS.  The newest BIOS (which is still
beta I believe) is revision 65.  In my beta testing for Rendition, it
nearly eliminated the problem on my system.  Contact Intergraph about
getting a copy.

NOTE: Be sure you have the most up to date motherboard BIOS before you
attempt to flash the Reactor's BIOS.

I've had the exact problem with my 3D Blaster (now returned).  It never
really powered down within games, but would do so every now and then
with a warm boot.  I believe there's a beta BIOS which reduces (but not
eliminates) the powerdown problem.  You might want to send Intergraph/
Rendition e-mail asking about this BIOS (it's not available to the
general public).  If they don't respond with a reasonable answer, you
might want to talk with Erick Cid, Mr. Senior Technical Advisor with
All Games Network :)

It's a BIOS issue.  Stayed tuned to the Intergaph web site.

While it may be fixable for some through this method, I must warn
all novice users who are not up to understanding this whole bios issue
both system and card such as me. I am one of the (few) very unlucky
who attempted to fix what I believed to be more numerous "random"
windoze95 crashes and monitor powerdown conflicts through initiating
this revision 65 bios with a flash attempt to the reactor. I can now
confirm through Intergraph Repair that I did "blow" my card due to
this. Still don't know why it happened for sure but it did and made
the card a complete "vegetable". Only function it would perform after
the "flash" was a continues power-down/off of monitor. Before
flashing, I was able to enjoy the rendition graphics boost of ICR2 and
VQUAKE which I must say was very impressive on my P100. Now I'm out
$7.45 for return shipping and a week (hopefully only) of awaiting a
replacement. I will not attempt to flash again until whatever is
causing this un-documented failure gets resolved.

I must say thumbs up to Intergraph support and customer service!
They have made it worth trying another even through my bad experience.
