You might want to check here: http://www.dslreports.com/ to see if there is
any information about Charter Communications.
It may not help but I have had AT&T cable for about 18 months. There have
been some ups and downs with the service but the last 6 months have been
relatively trouble free (raps self on head smartly several times ;-) ).
Depending on the download location I usually max out at 1.5 Mbps and that
includes going through a router with a hardware firewall.
As far as Bellouth is concerned: Yikes! I am planning to move in about a
month to a residence that has both AT&T cable and Bellsouth FastAccess
available. I decided to check my options so I went to Bellsouth's website to
learn what I could about their ADSL service. After reading through most of
their requirements and disclaimers I decided to stay with AT&T cable. AT&T
wants to charge $25 to transfer service so I think I'll just cancel their
service, wait about a month (Internet withdrawal...aaagh!), and then sign up
as a new customer to get the free installation and intro offer with NO
contractual requirements.
Price wise, in my area, cable internet access is about 10-15% cheaper per
month than most of Bellsouth's internet access only plans.
HTH.

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.
That last sentence may have decided it Mitch <G>
Thanks for the great information HTH. In all fairness I do live just outside
the 3 mile circle from a Bellsouth central office that they say is required for
optimal performance. It's more their customer support or lack thereof and lower
cable prices that will prompt my change. No internet for a month !! Yikes is
right :) You could always pick up an AOL 300 hrs free disk and go dial up at
the risk of going insane after cable :)
Thanks for your help,
Dan

You're welcome. Glad to help when I can.
As far as AOHell is concerned I'd rather sleep on a bed of hot coals than
install their junk software on my system. WinBlows has enough inherent
problems without further sabotage/subterfuge from the AOHell software.

Dan,
I've used Verizon DSL and Charter Pipeline. I generally had a bit more
downtime with DSL, but I was an early adopter in my area. The best thing
about Charter is combining it with digital cable service - I currently get
all the regular cable channels (including SPEED), all the digital cable
channels, all the HBO, Cinemax, Movie Channel, and Showtime channels, and my
cable internet for about $105/month. Granted, even with all those channels,
it's still a case of "500 channels and nothing to watch", but it's nice
having the choice for not much more than basic cable (about $40 most places)
and broadband internet (another $40).

Make lots of free NZ accounts. ;)

The predicted horror stories of 'shared bandwidth' never really did
materialize. I sure don't notice it.
That doesn't mean I haven't had trouble. It's been a real battle with Cox
and their conversion from RoadRunner. A nightmare is more accurate. But
that's because of Cox, not the cable itself.
If it's run right, it's fine.

I decided that bandwidth isnt the key issue for me and my family.
Low/consistent latency is worth the extra $15/mo. Bear in mind though I
live <3k/ft from the CO so I get exceptionally good lats.
As always in this stuff, your mileage may vary... Too many variables.

That is the exact package that I am getting Rick. I had the digital cable
channels but they just went up to 72.95 so I'm taking the package for 99.99 +
tax. This allows me to drop the 49.95 DSL bill. Thanks for the input,
Dan

...
Thought that might be the case :^)
Anyways, I don't do any online ***, so I can't comment on how well
Pipeline works for that, but as far as typical broadband stuff goes, once
you get past a certain threshold on download speed there's little to quibble
about. My cable modem seems about as fast as my old DSL setup, but not as
fast as my girlfriend's newer SBC DSL connection in CT.
