Just got in GPL today, and I am getting used to the handling and
stuff, my question is though, how does the Multiplayer work for
someone on a cable connection?  I open up the multiplayer screen, and
it just reads com ports, no an ip address!

You need to visit this site:

http://www.vroc.net/

This is how MP is enabled in GPL.  :-)

Once vroc is installed  open up the vroc.ini in the vroc folder and
overwrite the line with this
[VROC]
Address=racelist.vroc.net

this will enable you to see the race list.

hey fellas, we snared another one.:o)
Say good bye to your social life Rusty...

You need to edit your core.ini file to get it to look for
"alternate" comms.

If you just installed GPL, you will have a file named
"core.ini.sample" in the GPL directory. (You might want to keep a
copy of this original version.) Rename the file (or make a copy but
remove the ".sample" from the end of the filename.

Here is an extract from my version of core.ini containing the comms
info. I hid the listserv address; leave it blank. It will fill itself
in once you join some games.

------------
[ Communications ]
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1
disable_modem = 1                       ; Do not look for modems at
                                                        ; startup
synch_method = 1
bcast_listserv = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx        ; IP address of race list server
                                                        ; (not a real address)
bcast_send_freq = 30                    ; race data send frequency
log_server_comm_errors = 1              ; enable logging of comm errors
log_server_connect_status = 1           ; enable logging of connection
                                                        ; status

Thanks a lot for all the help!  I installed VROC and it is working
great....I am hoping to try some multiplayer out later next week....I
am in the middle of working 9 straight evenings, so time is sort of
limited, and plus, I want to practice a good bit, and get the handling
feel, and the setups right.  I am working on it track by track, and I
have been able to get around Monza tonight without spinning...LOL.  I
should have F1C here by tomorrow also, but I am already hooked on GPL!

If you've only had GPL a week I'd recommend staying offline for a little
bit until you're up to speed. You'll be braking in different places to
everyone else and people won't be pleased if you taken them out.

If monza is your chosen track for the moment, you need to be doing at
least 1.31's to get a decent race online.

Oh yeah I know better than that!  I wasn't planning on racing online
for at least a week or so.  I am already running laps at monza at
about 1.40, so I am still working on that.  It just proves a point
though, I have raced online with the Nascar games through the years,
and GPL really is a different monster!

You can run any time you want online.  Just be mindful of other
drivers.  Get out of the line and give them a pass if they are running
faster than you.  And don't pass where you shouldn't be passing!  For
example, IMHO, there's only 2 places at Monza to pass.  While its
possible to pass at other sections, you'd be putting yourlife in your
hands.

Just go to VROC.net and connect.  Download WinVROC.  They'll (the
people online) will help you out getting the racelist to display (you
need to load a patch).
