GPL-Happy But Overwhelmed

After being away from GPL for nearly two/three years I have a sudden urge to
load it up again and see if it gives me the same thrill it did all those
years ago. But, how things have changed in the interim. I am stunned by how
many 'addons' there are now and if I try and wade through them all I'll
never end up with enough time to actually play the sim.

Anyone care to hold my hand for a few seconds and guide me as to the barest
essentials that I should download inorder to at least get a taste for what I
have missed since the beginning of the millennium (particularly as I
understand that I might need a patch for it to run on my Athlon 2200+ and
Geforce 4600 card).

My you have been away.  Your cpu and Vid card are TOTALLY inadequate for
GPL  I recomend you stuff them in a box and ship them to me,  I will see
those pathetic pieces are disposed of properly.  Git yerself a good ol PIII
800 and a V5 3dfx...That's all ya need, now get packing/shipping!!!

okay...go to papy.com and dload the 1.2 patch, the d3d patch and the fast
cpu patch.(was that rolled into the d3d patch?? anyone??)  THEN off you go.
If you have a FF wheel, remember to choose the directX joystick calibration.

Dave,

Once again you have been helpful, and it is much appreciated. I am always
surprised by how quickly you answer people's questions (and for that alone I
should be giving you those outdated and redundant parts of my computer  ie
Athlon 2200+ and Geforce 4 card). But, I have too much respect for you to
insult you with such inadequate pieces of crap. My only recourse is to
soldier on with them, and try and hide my embarrassment in public.

Thanks

PJ

A few months ago I wanted to really sink my teeth in to GPL so I went
downloading all the tracks, addon's etc.   IMHO, here the things that
are a must-have.

Patches from (www.papy.com)
GPLEA Cars sets/Tracks (http://gplea.racesimcentral.com/)
JF Carsets (http://www.jfcarsets.cjb.net/)
Carset Manager
(http://www.netrevo.com/gplw/newsite/newdefaultjava.asp)
Program covers (http://www.trilon.com/bapom/)
Tracks (http://magnust.d2g.com/)
Oher addons (http://gplpp.com/)

Great tips from everyone - another nice one is to get the fixed OpenGL
patch, which seems to run even faster than the D3D patch, look a
little bit nicer, and even seems smoother at less than 36fps.  I'd
post the link, but I can't find it right now - do a Google on RAS and
it's been mentioned recently.
BTW - 2xFSAA has problems but you can run 4x just fine.

4xAA,4xAniso,1280res 75% detail bias.  With updated track graphics and
GPLEA 16-bit cars I get 33FPS at the back of a Monaco grid.  You'll be
golden :).

Hmm - was about to fire up RC2000, but now I'm tempted to hit GPL, or
keep tweaking N2002.

PS - anyone have a single, complete carset update for N2002?  Having
to get each car over dialup is a pain (just like me, to *** about
free stuff!).

PPS - Remember the GPL2 petition?  You think if all of us who signed
it came up with $20 each it'd be enough to get Dave or Grant or
somebody to put the N2002 tire model on GPL?

UUUAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!
That rig is so slow, cars might run backwards ;-)

Aehm...

XP1500 + GF2 GTS 64 DDR here.
I'm still fine since I can run F1 2002 at reasonable details and resolution
smoothly.
