Oh well... here's to the next four years!

I still find it kinda sad that we still have yet to get a game that can
match the driving and online play of this 4 year old masterpiece. N2k2 comes
close but....

N2k is a better game for online play and it is a more realistic sim given
the lack of a tire model in GPL ...

Is anyone still racing GPL online? I didn't check out this game till
yesterday, and now I'm hooked but I can't find anyone online. I tried
VROC, but it doesn't show any races.

You need to get the fix from here:

http://www.vroc.net/html/common/download.htm

If you don't already have it. Sometimes the racelist doesn't come up, but
it's rarely down for more than half an hour or so, and it doesn't happen
often.

I race most evenings (UK time).

I turned 30 last May, so I know how painfull it is to have your 30th
birthday. Suddenly you think to yourself 'Man, I'm 30, shouldn't I
stop playing computer games and get a life?'
But I can assure you, that feeling goes away after a couple of days..
Congrats!

2002:

...where I had the best, closest, cleanest multi-car fight in ages...
until I punted off Axel Linther by locking up at the last La Source
of the last lap :/

I joined a Rouen Int-Long race just after writing my last post.

I took the Honda because according to GPLRank I hadn't raced that
combination, put together a workable setup in praccy & qualified about
half-way down the grid.

I got off the line well, putting me in about 4th or 5th for the first couple
of laps, with Lotus' ahead and behind, and had a pretty busy time
maintaining position.
After a half dozen laps of the 18 lap race the field had thinned out a bit
and although I hadn't passed anyone, by the half way point of the race I was
in the lead, simply by driving consistently & not going off. Rouen is good
for that ;-)

With three laps to go the fuel pressure started to drop and the Lotus in 2nd
started to close the 20 second margin I'd managed to build up.

He almost caught me in the braking zone at the end of the back straight with
just over one lap to go, and I had 40psi of fuel left, but fortunately (for
me) he went off & I crossed the line to start the final lap about 10 seconds
ahead.

As I did my final lap, the fuel dropped below 15psi as I accelerated down
the back straight, and the Lotus caught & passed me, again at the end of the
straight.

The engine was spluttering as I short-shifted up the front straight, finally
dying as I went through the right kink at about 40mph and I coasted the
final half mile to the finish-line getting slower & slower...

I was jumping up & down in my seat trying to egg the car on, and I crossed
the finish line in 2nd place at 5mph!

Not the fastest race I ever did, but it's never the same twice ;-)
