gpl was released (in the uk) 3 years ago today.

happy birthday to you.....etc.

thought for the day:
30 GBP / untold hours playing it = what a bargain!
(i'll ignore the amount spent on vid cards, trips to lan events,  etc)

You could think of a program as somebody's baby.  They have laboured over
it, and I suppose in some cases loved it.  THen you have us, the adopted
parents who have spoiled it with cpu upgrades and coddled it with wheels,
and dressed it with new paintjobs, and found new playgrounds for it to play
on with the homebuilt tracks and....
  yes we are being silly...
but Happy Birthday anyway to the code-monkeys at Papyrus who developed it.

What is? GPL itself? Those of us who play it? Dave Henrie's post?
Upgrading? Writing addons? Being unable to distinguish between "its"
and "it's"...?

It was a good response, then the grammatical dig for that extra 'oomph' made
it great.
  Made me smile.

Well, the "apostrophe-s" thing confuses me too. As a contraction for "it is"
or "it has" I'm pretty much with the program, but I'm always in doubt about
things like "David's copy of GPL". And with a sentences like "When David was
in the Ferrari, he kept overrevving it's engine" I'm afraid I'm losing the
plot. I usually just put down what "looks right".

Then again, the poster you are responding appears to have English as his
primary language, so should know better.

Any non-native-english-speakers I've worked with have had a better grasp on
how to get grammar and punctuation right. Probably had to think more about
it and it sticks better.
Back on topic though - I'd hate to think of the number of hours I've spent
on GPL since "GPL plus Voodoo2" were purchased late '98. I should be faster
than I am...

2001:

Sure, but you don't make stupid remarks. Well, not often :-)

Just for the record:

Use "it's" for "it is" and "it has".
Use "its" for the possessive - "I revved its engine" etc.
