3D Card for N2

Ok all you techies need some advice.  I am putting together a new PII 300MHZ
machine and have delayed on a new video card.  The old machine had the Scream
3D (Canopus) PCI 4MB Rendition Verite based card in it.  Looking for
recomendations before replacing it.  Do you recommend:

1. Use the old card and add a 3dfx AGP Vodoo2 accelerator card like Monster 3D
2.  Get a new 2D card and new 3D Voodoo2 acerlator card
3.  Hang tuff and wait on new Banschee 2D/3D Voodoo2 card later this year

Get a new 2D/3D card and new 3D Voodoo2 accelerator card

The Screamin 3D was great for being the first TRUE combination 2D/3D
card but I think it's time has passed, along with the other v1000
cards. If I had the money to blow, I'd go with an 8 meg Hercules
Thriller for use with the Rendition games (NASCAR 2 flies on it!) and
a voodoo2 for the Glide. Don't use 3DFX for N2, the Rendition is FAR
superior. I also prefer Rendition to 3DFX for GPL. Based on Papy's
past history and experience with Rendition, I'd say it'll be nicer on
NASCAR 3 as well.

How does the Herc board do in supporting ICR2 Rendition mode?
Are there known glitches (mirror problems, anti-aliasing support,
etc)?

Uunfortunately,  All of the V2x00 cards have those problems with
ICR2/CART.

Good advice... I'd suggest putting the 2D/3D card in the AGP and going
with a PCI Voodoo2.

Couldn't find an AGP Thriller around here, but a local shop just got a
batch of Genoa V-Raptors in today. They are the 4MB AGP variety.
Needless to say, I grabbed one in a hurry at $79.00

Nascar2 and GPL both look GREAT on the Rendition 2200, much nicer than
on the Voodoo2. All is working fine in Win98, using the latest driver
from Genoa and the latest BIOS flash version for the card from their
website.

Trips, what if any, FR increase did you see between the V2200 and the
VooDoo?  What type of machine do you have?  I have been thinking of a
good quality V2200 card as my next upgrade and will still be running
N2 for some time yet.  I am not impressed with the improvement (if
any) using the 3Dfx patch and VooDoo1.  Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I can't say I've seen any frame rate difference between the 3DFX,
Rendition, or normal versions. All three appear to exceed 30fps at all
times. I do run the Rendition version with the "-DMA" switch.

I'm running on a PII 333 on an ASUS P2B motherboard with 128MB of Cas-2
PC100 Corsair SDRAM, Genoa Vraptor 4MB AGP and Diamond Monster2 8MB, and
a Soundblaster 16 (old non-PnP style) and a CH Gamecard3.

For what it's worth, I like the appearance of the Rendition version the
best of all three.

Thanks Trips.  I think I'll add a V2200 card...then I can enjoy the
best of both worlds :).
