The other cars checking up happens all the time. I now have started to
plan my starts with this in mind, and try to work my way to the outside
lane and blow by everybody when they check up. Sometime this works,
sometimes you end up splattered all over the track.

As far as your tires go, do take tiis the wrong way, but both. Your
driving style will waist your tires as moch as a bad setup. Try to
follow some of the other AI cars for a while, using there turn-in
points and brake/accel. points, and learn the tracks. This will no
doubt help the driving aspect. Setups take time to fine tune, or you
can download them from some FTP sites. But beware, just because a setup
works for Joe Blow, doesn't mean it'll work for you.

Good Luck

I used to have exactly the same problem with tyres. The solution was a
T2 wheel/pedal setup and a much smoother, less aggressive driving
style. My problem was that I was using a ***joystick and simply
couldn't keep it smooth enough through the turns to avoid burning out
my tyres. On a good lap with a good setup there should be very little
tyre screeching.  A T2 might be a bit of an expensive solution, so you
might consider using the joystick buttons for accelerator and brake.
This separates out the control movements and can help you keep smooth
at the expense of a little realism - but what the hell - driving with
a joystick isn't exactly realistic is it :)

My experiences have not been good on starts in this game. At certain
tracks on starts when I start worse than 20th, (so I'm not very good yet)
after the green flies and I come around by the flag stand and a bunch of
cars just suddenly check up in front of me usually resulting in massive
fender bending and yellow flags. Has anyone else had this experience or
knows what I may be doing wrong? It doesn't seem to me that I'm doing
anything out of the ordinary but it happens consistently.

Also I burn up my tires about twice as quick as anyone else on EVERY
track. is it my setup or do I need to learn how to drive, or both?

Any help would be appreciated.

Up till now, so has mine.  My initial problem was inadequate processor
for this game (486/33 using VGA).  I've just upgraded to a 486/75 and the
frame rate can (and does) hit 30 and stays real close to 30 while showing
8 up front and 2 behind.  What does this do?  It lets you better see
whats up ahead.

First, take it easier on the first lap or two while things sort
themselves out.  To borrow an old line: to finish first you must first
finish.

Bill Clinton said one very intelligent thing early in his term: "doing
the same thing over and over and expecting different results" is the
definition of stupidity.  I believe he used a different term, but meant
the same thing.   So, if it consistently happens, then, yes you are doing
something wrong.

Probably both.  First, I haven't seen your driving but, I suspect it is
much like mine was (initially) throw it into the turn turn the wheel to
the max and then floor it.  Almost inevitably it put me into the wall.
Fortunately I learned that breaks are very important in helping a car
turn (although I had to get a racing magazine or two to tell me this).
Slowing into a turn is a must.  The critical speed of a turn depends on a
lot of things, mostly what the car will tolerate.  If you hear a lot of
squeeling, you're either over the critical speed for your setup or you're
using too much wheel (or both).  Try slowing down sooner and/or using less
steering lock.

For a better understanding of how a race car works (particularly a
Papyrus stock car) try getting Lee Buchanan's Official Strategies &
Secrets book.  It has a nifty chart that helps troubleshoot what is wrong
with your setup and tips on what is the 'best' line on any given track.

Oh, and on the tire wear: try softer shock settings on the offending wheel.
And pay attention to the tire temps, if they go yellow something's wrong.

Mike
-I hope this helps out a little

you should reduce the number of cars seen and heard to reduce collisions.
also try another setup!!

Been playing at 100% at all tracks except road courses, which I;m still
trying to get the hang of.
