Talladega Starts - NASCAR

I can usually get the pole at Talladega and if I time the
green flag well, I can stay in the lead.  However, if I don't
get the pole or  for starts after yellow flags (my pitstops
stink) I get left behind going into turn one.  By the completion
of the first lap, I'm down a second or more.

I've tried manual and automatic shifting and various gear
ratios.  Usually what happens is that I run up on the next
car's bumper in second, but get left in third and fourth.

In the older version, the draft was more pronounced and I
could catch up.  Not with version 1.2.  The only thing that
seems to work is to let a bunch of cars pass until I get up
to speed and then use their draft to work my way to the
leaders.

Does anyone's gear ratios or strategy (short of taking
a "flyer") which prevents them from being dropped at the
start?
