Actually, I think the quote was more on the lines of an off-the-cuff "We're
bigger than Jesus." I'm too lazy to look it up right now, so I offer it
provisionally. But I remember it in part because a more-or-less funny book
came out in the mid-to-late 70's which was a "what-if-the-Beatles-reunited"
kind of thing, and in it, it turns out that what John *actually* meant when
he said "we're bigger" was that they were *taller* than Jesus. Ha ha.
Anyhow, I'm sorry to say that in my area of the USA (the south), good ol'
boys and their lil' wimmin promptly organized Beatle-Burning parties (well,
Beatle *record* burning parties). Evidently, that whole experience really
shook Lennon. Lots of rabid hate-mail and so forth . . .
