Nah, there are enough modern F1 games out already.  I'd rather see a CART
game...by *anybody*.

I second that!  I just watched the CART Grand Prix of Cleveland on TV
today.  This weekend I also caught parts of the IRL race at Richmond,
the LeMans show on FSN, the Grand Am race that followed it, and the
NASCAR race at Milwaukee.  That CART race was by far the most exciting
of all of them.  Hopefully the Sierra folks saw that and they will
relent and let Papy do a CART sim!

I have a vague memory of a VERY old, primitive F1 management sim featuring
the pitcrew in an "arcade" sequence (on the good old Speccy, I believe).
Basically, you had to move your pit guys to the correct positions at
the tires and rear of car. The more money you spent on your pit guys, the
faster they would run. Seems about right...

they were worn, right?

But as you've found with sims, DGF, being newer and more modern is not
an automatic guarantee of quality...

Quite possibly, yes. My memory of this is very faint. There are probably a
bunch of good reasons not to remember what it was called... :)

A early 70's Sim would be incredible....just enough downforce to make
you feel invincible and just enough horsepower to scare the shit out
of an insane man. When did they stop racing the Ring...? The last year
they raced the Ring would be great...

Today's tracks are boring to tears....I keep staring at the variety of
Chicane....err I mean F1 sims out there and they just bore me. Besides
they all sound shit because of the inability to translate the sound
into a computer game.

Pitstop & Pitstop 2, if i'm not mistaken.  The second one was a
classic IMO.  2 player splitscreen.  lotta fun for its day.   Its nice
how graphics have improved :)

I'm not all that old-- I wasn't born yet in 1967, the year simulated
by GPL.  My knowledge of that era pretty much comes from GPL itself, the
movie _Grand Prix_, and Speedvision's _Legends of Motorsport_.  But it's
pretty clear to me that F1 was more interesting then than it is now.

There's still some very good racing out there today, but by and large,
it's not in F1.  Clearly, compared to the 60s, something had to be done
to improve safety, and clearly, the teams will do anything they can to
make their cars faster (thus we get wings, traction control, &c).  But I
think it's equally clear that in the process, something has been lost...

That said, I still watch modern F1, and I do enjoy it, to some degree.
Lately, I've been finding that qualifying provides more drama than the
race itself.

publisher: CRL

year: 1983,1985 ?

title: Formula 1 (Manager)

http://compsoc.dur.ac.uk/~nac/cpcreviews/f/index3.html

has the Amstrad CPC version listed with a summary, and a downloadable game
file (for a CPC emulator I guess)

the CPC had the goodyear blimp on it also (I have the spectrum version on a
tape somewhere)

http://www.zxscreens.i12.com/zxscreens/formula_1_crl.htm (loading screens I
think)

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/games/f.html

has a spectrum version I think.  It may complain about "deep linking" to the
site, so head for the archive.

This game was also resurrected on the Amiga but I forget the name in that
incarnation, and was also re-done and repackaged as a Touring Car management
game.

cheers
