My personal experience so far:

first installation N4 insists on installing a very unstable DX8.0.
N4 never runs.
Uninstall and full re-install-N4 "tests" vid card and forces me into OpenGL!
Then after 40 seconds n4 final starts up and sends me into the "new player"
screen where it refuses to let me enter my name and eventually requires a
cold boot because in OpenGL mode the system is locked
Uninstall and reinstall-N$ now accepts Direct 3d and allows me to enter name
I go to set up nascar sprint racing wheel-N4 does not recognize brake pedal
I exit and launch Game controller and system locks up.
Cold boot time again-
Finally get wheel config'ed and double click N4 icon-DVD-ROM drive spins for
about 60 seconds and nothin else happens.
Reboot-
Launmch N4 and 60 seconds later the sierra splash screen appears and I get
to see a neat little movie ala Nascar Revolution
Finally I get to Daytona-jum[p in for a few practice laps and mash that gas
pedal and car does not respond-back to options where i find my wheel's
configuration is gone-re-config
and get back to the track and actually run a few hot laps!
Go to qualify at 99% and get in the top 25
Start race-frametate around 12-15 (PIII-450 no o'c Voodoo3) round turn 1 and
system freezes up-can't ctrl-alt-del cant cycle power switch-must actually
unplug system!

pull out N4 cd-crush N4 cd case-thrash N4 manual against desk-curse Papy for
all they're worth-vow to distribute this piece of shit freely to all
interested parties-settled down and ran 100 laps at Daytona-on Nascar

>first installation N4 insists on installing a very unstable DX8.0.

I haven't picked up N4 yet, but I've been using DX8 since I bought
Mechwarrior 4 (which requires it), and it's fine.
Since you already have 8, maybe you should try snagging 8a.
If the sim is alternately saying you can/can't run in D3D mode, I'd be
concentrating on the video drivers.

Dx 8 runs fine for me with an ol V3000, try using the Vid drivers on the N4
cd?

Good Luck

Not sure we can blame DX8 either.  I already had it installed, so
didn't install it  from N4.  I ran N4 last night for over 2 hours
straight without any problems.  (other than I do have a Kenwood CDrom,
had to get the bios update) after that though, it was smooth sailing.
Not one lockup, crash, or graphic hitch.   No problems detecting my
LWFF, or calibrating it.  Overall, I'm very pleased with N4 thus far.

Actually I had the same lockup problem with the demo, and I was running DX 7a
at that time....I have DX8 now and I still get the lockup.  On my system DX8
doesn't seem to give me any problems, so it "should" be something else that is
causing it.

I've been running DX8 on my W2K box for months w/o a hit of a problem.
Sounds like somthing else is wrong with your system because its not DX8.

Ok,
N4 does NOT insist on installing DX8, you can skip that process and it will
run fine.
When running the sim the first time, it will test your graphics and set a
texture memory - it does NOT force you into OpenGL or D3D, you simply choose
which you want to run. If your running a GeForce card, I would highly
recommend OpenGL for better framerates.

Just wanted to clarify those first 3 points for others, I really didn't get
much beytond them. enjoy Heat!

sounds like you have a lousy computer to me. You need to be more careful
with what you delete and such. I would bet a formatted hard drive would fix
your problems.

That means bad system, or bad system maintenance. Not papy's fault.

How many times do we get the messages?

Well, I have a choice on my screwed system running DX8, the only restriction
being that if I run OGL, which I do because its faster than D3D, I have to
reduce my desktop  to high color before I can run at 16bit depth.

N4 seems to be extremely stable in both graphics modes--I've experienced not
so much as a hiccup from it at all.  So far, anyway.  It's by far the nicest
racing sim out of the box I've ever experienced.

I installed N4 and (foolishly?) let it install DX8.  I insert N4 CD, click
on run, get hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing.  Installed latest VIA
4 in 1 drivers per prior post, then installed latest V3 drivers.  Still

now isn't and asn old Toshiba CD-ROM.  Game will not boot.  Demo ran fine as
did GPL, GP3

Anyone gotten past this yet?????
