No way. Just got the N4 CD earlier today from my friendly neighborhood Fed-Ex
fellow and the game DOES NOT insist on installing DX8. It SUGGESTS installing
DX8, but gives you the option of keeping DX7a. DX8 isn't that bad anyway. I've
had it installed and have never experienced a problem.

Backup your stuff and try a reformat. Always good to do a fresh reinstall of
everything every few months to avoid the types of problems you describe.

Me three.  I had DX8 installed well before I installed N4.  I have not
had any problems whatsoever.
