OT: Monster Sound M80 and Gameport Joystick Question

I reloaded my system yesterday and put in a Monster Sound M80 I bought.
It showed only one device, the Monster
Sound itself, in Device Manager. I installed my Sidewinder software,
and the joystick worked right off the bat.
I installed a bunch of games after that and something got messed up,
because the joystick wouldn't work later in the day. I
couldn't even get anything to show up as Not Connected in the Game
Controllers applet (DX6).  I could NOT select either the Gameport
Joystick or Monster Sound Gameport in the Game Controllers panel.  When
I clicked on them, it simply would not save the settings.......so no
gameport.  I tried both the drivers on my CD and the newest ones from
Diamond.  No success.
Anyway, I installed a Microsoft Joystick Gameport device using my OSR2
CD. The stick is plugged into the
Monster Sound still and working fine now.
This just seems weird though......is this okay?? I have no idea why it
was working fine before without having a
Gameport Joystick device though.  I'm just wondering what's going on
and is it kosher just to go ahead and leave it set this way, with a MS
Gameport device installed?

Did you install the latest sidwinder drivers? Also sometimes you need to
uninstall the monster drivers and reinstall them.

you need to change your port to the monster sound port
