CH Joystick gameport problems

by Morton Chalo » Mon, 23 Jul 2001 13:19:29

I have a CH Products F-16 Fighterstick joystick It connects to the
gameport (and the keyboard but that's not important).

It worked great on my old motherboard (66MHz bus speed) and
Soundblaster AWE64 but won't work on my new motherboard (133MHz bus
speed) and SoundBlaster SB Live. The motherboard does not have any ISA
slots.

The CH Products application "JCenter" reports that the SB Live!
gameport is way too slow to support the F-16 Figherstick.

So I read some of the older threads here and bought a gameport-to-USB
converter called Rockfire USB-Nest. Now JCenter is reporting that my
USB-converted gameport is too fast!

Actually, with the gameport-USB converter, I can get Windows98 SE to
recognize the joystick but the CH Products key-programming software
does not recognize that any joystick is attached to the system.

I know that they have a fix for motherboards with bus speed of 100+
MHz but I think I'm stuck on the gameport connection before I get that
far.

I talked to CH Products tech support and they said:
--the SB Live gameport is too slow to support their joysticks. It
probably works for simpler ones, but not for this one.
--they don't recommend using gameport-to-USB converters (though he
seemed rather confused on the analog/digital issue)

So... has anyone else been able to get the CH Products F-16
Fighterstick to work:
  --over an SB Live! gameport
  --over a gameport-USB converter

I know that CH Products makes an ISA gameport card but does anyone
know of:
  --a PCI gameport card
--a converter that allows you to run an ISA card in a PCI slot

Thanks!

CH Joystick gameport problems

You may be out of luck.  Manufacturers are abandoning support for isa
devices and most of the new motherboards don't even have  isa slots anymore.
It sounds like CH would be the party responsible for providing updates to
their hardware so it can function with modern equipment.  However, if they
have discontinued the gameport version of the stick they may not commit the
resouces to fix the problem..
A USB stick may be the only solution...good luck.
