most likely he was running v1.0 of gpl and that did have some problems
with V3 cards...most likely those were carried over to the V5. the 1.2
patch of course, addressed those issues.
I compared the 800x600FSAAx4 to the 1024x760 nonFSAA. I loaded each
into a separate window and flipped between them. 8x6 fsaa wins hands
down.

I don't think that FSAA will need more cpu power. FSAA will only put more
strain on the gfx card. If you run at the same resolution and turn on FSAA the
fps will go down but only due to that the gfx card will not be able to keep up.
This is good for GPL since GPL demands a lot from the cpu but isn't that hard
on the gfx card. This means that there is power avaliable for FSAA IMHO.
