JFcarset crashes GPL

by Neil Everet » Sat, 22 Dec 2001 07:21:15

I have to admit to not playing GPL for a few months...

Anyway, now I'm back, I have a problem with the newly installed JFcarset.
Everything runs fine before this is installed BTW.  But watching one of my
favorite replays with the new carset installed, GPL just freezes within
seconds of starting the replay, although the sound continues.  I cannot
ctrl-alt-del out, and have to restart the machine.  Go back to the previous
car67 setup and things return to normal, just without the pretty cars ;-)

The same thing happens whether I run with the JF 3d wheels or not, so it
seems to be related to the car textures?

Checked all the usual stuff- IRQ sharing, running cpu and graphics at
default Mhz, bios settings etc.etc.

My setup is:

ECS K7S5A MB
256Mb DDR
Duron 800 (usually at 1067)
V3 2000 (usually at 166) w. 1.07 drivers
SB Live w LW3.0
MS FFB Wheel

Anyone got any ideas for a solution (other than just running the normal car
textures...)?

Installing all those addons is quite sensitive - one little error in
one car and you have a big chance gpl will crash.
The best way to figure out -which- car is causing the problems is to
choose one car, drive a couple of laps with it, watch the replay, and
see if GPL crashes. Do this with all the other cars..

The JF carset -does- work perfect, I and many other people use it.
Let me know if you can't get it working right - in the worst case I
can upload my carset for you if you can provide the webspace.

This usually means your video card is overheating. Go back to the old
textures <g>

Good point Leo, I was mistaken.. when something is wrongly installed,
GPL gives a 'could not load track' error, even if the problem is with
one of the cars.
When GPL freezes and the sound continues that indeed seems to be an
overheating problem.. what kind of card have you got Neil?

And ofcourse you did mention your gfx card in your post - I should
stop posting at 3:30am :-/
V3 card.. yup. had the same problems with my v3 card, not enough
texture memory to handle all the fancy updates.
Solution: buy a GF2 GTS, they're getting cheaper every day :)

Andre / off to bed for a hardly needed sleep

I guess this can't happen if you are not overclocking anything. My system
also freezes with the sound on with the JFcarset installed. With 3D wheels
it freezes immediately. With 2D wheels it didn't lock up until I crashed the
car.

Pentium III 800
ATI Radeon AllinWonder

I have this problem (freeze with sound continuing) with JFcarset too
with the 3D wheels.  However if I turn off images in the mirror.  It
doesn't freeze.

Ok but.. don't you prefer mirrors over 3d wheels??

Did you try George Smiley's Glide patch? http://home.swbell.net/gmsmiley/
The jf carset wouldn't work on my Voodoo3 without it.
cheers,
Cyrille
