Wow!!!

I hope everyone has been skilled enough to have a crash that engulfed
the car in flames. The effect is just awesome. I spun in turn 2  and
went into the guard rail backwards and the car burst into flames and
went flying through the air with flames and black smoke trailing behind.
And this was right after my best lap yet(1:15.74), I guess I got too
e***d. ;)

I was able to "flame" it by shooting the gap under the flag stand.
The car (F3) stayed on the track and I was able to make a lap,
offering toasted marshmallows to eager fans along the way...  :)

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?

Remember what the drivers used to wear in those days: slightly "flameproof"
cotton coveralls, lightweight leather driving gloves, and an open-face
helmet with goggles. NOT what you want to be wearing in a fiery crash!

Also, when did the drivers generally start using seat belts? I know that
even in the early 60's they still rarely used them, and were generally
"thrown out" during a serious crash. They might have figured this was
preferable to staying in the car since there was only a low roll bar for
protection.

The BBC's "Top Gear" program here in the UK had one of their
presenters testing Graham Hill's original '67 Lotus-49 around a
circuit here in the UK, and he made a point of mentioning there were
no seatbelts in it.

(The presenter is a professional racing driver btw, Tiff Needell who
races a Lister Storm in the FIA GT series as far as I recall. Don't
try it at home kids!).

Cheers!

Seatbelts weren't used until Jackie Stewart insisted on wearing them in every
car he drove.  Then others started to wear them.

Note that the cotton overalls had no "flameproofing" treatment whatsoever.

I began racing SCCA at Elkhart Lake in 1966, and raced a TR3 in stock class.
Our club had a mandatory policy for asbestos/cotton blend driving suits, a
lap belt, 3point roll-bar behind the drivers seat, and a kill switch. We
also moved the battery to the trunk. That was pretty much all the safety
that was required. We would run 2 liter to 7 litre cars in the same race. If
you think Road America is narrow now, you should have seen it in that era.
The new track is like an interstate compared to what it was then. Any of you
who have been there in the last 20yrs or so and have driven on the little
road that goes around following the track, that was the track then....:-).
It is a scary feeling to be going 110mph and have an AC Cobra coming up on
you and have to put 2 wheels off the track to let him pass you on that old
wagon trail they had then. Those old driving suits weighed a ton, and were
hot as hell, even in an open car like the Triumph. Many of the clubs did not
require the asbestos blend suits or seat belts until about 1968. After that
I believe that even the F1 drivers were required to wear them.

I know that seatbelts were used in 1982, but that year Gilles was killed
flying off the***pit... or before, or after, but he did fly off that
damned***pit.
