Have you flashed the latest Bios Don?, this was just released.

I have an AsusA7V333 that seemed buggy for awhile. It took a couple
bios releases and all seems well now.

Too late!  I just got mine running Friday.  Wouldn't work with Windows 98 so
I was forced to get XP Home.  It was a pain, but I now get over 90fps in
GTR2002 with everything turned on except for reducing the number of AI cars.
This is with a 64MB Abit Ti4200, 1700+cpu and two sticks of 256MB Crucial
2100.  I still have unresolved issues but overall I'm quite happy.  Estatic
I might add. Who wouldn't be after driving a beautiful Ferarri 550 Maranello
around Brands Hatch for about 10 straight hours!  That car is
intoxicating...  anyway yea, despite what Anand's says, I WOULD NOT buy this
mobo again.  Maybe after new drivers???  As a matter of fact, I don't think
I'll ever buy another AMD cpu again either.  This was my first.  Just
deciding on what cpu cooler to buy is way too much trouble.  And then
dealing with the cooler noise - way too loud.  From now on I'll pay a little
more and stick with Intel.

As for your noise issues, if you have a noisy CPU cooler it's because
you got bad advice from your dealer, I'm running a 2600+ myself and it's
dead quiet, my choice of CPU cooler is the Glacial Tech Igloo 2320 (non
PRO), we're using this cooler as the default cooler in the systems we
build for our customers as well and we get no complaints about noise,
it's rated at 25db and can handle up to 2600+ CPU's and even over here
it's less than 25 dollars, CoolerMaster has one that is rated at 25db as
well but seems to emit less noise standing next to it compared to the
Igloo

AMD vs Intel....old "fight" :-), my next CPU will most likely be from
Intel as well, but for other reasons than yours

And unless you are overclocking, the processor/Fan thing is not a problem.
Just spend $20 more and get the Boxed version of the processor with the
factory heatsink.

I've always bought boxed processors (mainly for the 3 year warranty) and
I've yet to ever need anything other than the factory heatsink/fan in the
box.

Some of this heatsink/fan stuff is off the map :)

And yes, I use the factory thermal tape too.  I've never needed any sort of
fancy thermal grease to get the job done.  I also firmly believe that on
Athlon processors, the thermal pads help protect that awfully exposed core
they have.

        Try the www.amdmb.com forum on cooling for info or just pick
one from www.plycon.com.  Forget what the 30 degrees/overclock guys
say.  Get a cooler with an 80mm fan and a low noise fan, Panaflo L or
Vantec Stealth (plycon is a good source).  Don't overclock.

Most of the people that have problems are clueless morons who refuse
to read their ***in manuals, or who don't properly research their
hardware before they buy it.

Then, there's the 1% of that group who have real DOA boards (and
we're not talking about just Asus either)...

I didn't buy from a local dealer, I buy from a variety of Internet sources,
none of which gives any advice.  The choices for cooling AMD cooling fans
are almost endless - hence my point.  I spent almost an entire day
researching this.  For what?  With boxed Intel, you know for sure you are
going to get quiet, adequate cooling with no worries.  With AMD, I *wasted*
several hours of my time and ended up with a fan that does a good job of
keeping the thing cool, but with an excessive amount of noise.   I'm waiting
for the low speed TbredBs to come out.  That was the main reason for buying
the Asus mobo - overclocking.  So I'll need a HiPo fan.  Maybe watercooling
is the way to go with AMD.

I overclock everything.  The whole point of buying the A7N8X board was to
overclock the low speed TbredB's when they come out.  It's cheap horsepower.

I would suggest that you ended up with the "wrong" fan because of your
unfamiliarity with AMD's, which is totally understandable since it's
your first AMD system, but had you gone the other way and bought OEM
Intel CPU's, you would have the exact same problem you know :-)

I bought a Zalman Copper 'Flower' Heatsink with a 90mm fan.  I was so
disgusted with the deafeningly-noisy, 'Coolermaster' fan that my supplier
threw in with my OEM XP 1800+.  However, I've been very dissappointed with
this combo too - I find that the CPU runs so hot with this copper heatsink
that I have to run the 90mm fan at its maximum speed making it nearly as
loud as the original fan.  Have you had any experience with these
(expensive) Zalmans?  Are the GlacialTek Igloos any better?
