Does anybody like these things?  They seem more like speedbumps to me.
Compare the Monza in GPL with the Monza in MotoGP 2, or the F1 series, and
there's alot more braking in the modern tracks.  One reason I liked Monza
was it was a nice easy track to learn, but the chicanes sort of mess that
up.  Just my thoughts- I'm not a very "serious" sim racer.

I tried playing Total Immersion Racing and the tracks are littered with
chicanes.  I assume they are mostly real tracks, of course, but I haven't
seen them in other games.

Max Mosley seems quite fond of them.

Someone should make a Spa 94 for F1C or GPL or N2003 just so we can
relive the incredible rush of taking Eau Rouge at 50mph.

aahh...chicanes. Why don't they just install traffic lights instead? I'm
honest, I'd slow down. >;)
One does begin to wonder why the track has to be altered when the drivers
can't handle the speed anymore.
Couldn't be the car's fault could it?

One of the items that attracted me to the Lemans 2002 24hr mod for
F12k2 was the fact they had several tracks without chicanes.  They took out
the busstop at Spa, and the Motorcycle chicane at Sugo(From GTR2002).
Strangely, I found the bigger chicanes like those at LeMAns didn't bother
me as much as the rinky-dink ***s like the end of the lap at Suzuka or
those three hackjobs at Monza.
I find the chicane in the 2003 version of Magny Cours to be a real
challenge.  I watch the real drivers straight line it and I just can't seem
to find the same line.  :)

Depends on how tight they are, and what I am driving.  In F1, the first
chicane at Monza is too tight, the next one is only moderately bad, and the
third one really isn't an issue.  The final chicane at Suzuka is horrible.
The chicanes at Imola don't bother me at all.  But all those comments only
apply to an F1 car.  In sedans they get progressively more difficult as the
car gets bigger.  If there is enough space so that I can drive whatever
vehicle I have as if it were just a tight S-bend then a chicane doesn't
bother me, but when it is tight enough to throw me off my rhythm or make me
tiptoe through it then it becomes bothersome.

Chicanes are LOVED in Europe as they supposedly cut down on any
advantage of cars with high horsepower and acceleration but lousy
handling, as the cars with better handling can use the chicanes to catch
up.

A lot of rally stages, esp. European rallies, have chicanes that's
nothing more
than a few bales of straw and few barrels to force drivers to make an
S-turn.

Q: Yeah, but why are there chicanes?
A: They alter the original design of a track to slow the cars down.
Q: Well geez Bob, why would you want to slow a car down when its intended
purpose is to go fast?
A: Well Sam...its politics. There are a lot of sanctions out there that
don't see it the old fashioned way...anymore. The authorities want us to
believe that chicanes were implemented to make it safer for all those
involved....for participant and spectator. And the more lives we save, the
less insurance companies have to pay out in the event of a fatality.
Q: But Bob, isn't that what the thrill of racing is all about?
A: Sam, you'll find as time goes on, you'll get used to having chicanes as
an everyday part of racing life. Eventually, you'll begin to think of how we
could of raced without them. And younger, newer drivers don't know the world
without them...and what you don't know, you won't miss.
Q: Wow Bob...its kind of like getting a new tax. It really hurts when you
have to pay more, but eventually you accept because there's no way to win.
A: Correct Sammy boy. It's here to stay.
Q: Hey Bob, isn't all that slowing down in so many corners harder on brakes
and steering parts?
A: Hmmm...could be....
Q: Doesn't that make it unsafe too?
A: Its actually not about being safe Sammy, its about money...plain and
simple...and if you keep asking me questions, I'm going to have to suspend
your racing priviledges
