Mosport, GP2, wings and flying

Being a P266 notebook owner, I've envied all the GPL and SCGT racers
who could play on my old "hometown" track, Mosport.  I finally found a
remarkably well done version of the track for GP2, put together by Malcom
Styles - it can be found on the tracks section of the www.AlphaF1.com/gp2/
page. It's quite remarkable how some new textures can liven up the old
game.

If you haven't tried it yet for GP2, I recommend it.  Personally, I find
putting a fast lap in on this track to be much more difficult than Spa. T2
and especially T4 with a low downforce setup are much more tense than Eau
Rouge.  The kerbs will alo catch you out.

I imagine the GPL boys must be getting reaalllly light coming over the
crest of T2 and T4.... is it possible to get air on these corners?  I'm
not sure how accurate the physics modelling in the vertical direction is
in GP2, but if I get the wrong balance of front and rear wing, the front
end lifts off coming over the crest of T4, which gives an amazing
adrenaline rush until it touches down again.

The CCs also do remarkably well on this track, and also make fabulous
boneheaded moves - I just sat back the other night and watched several
laps from the "director's seat" and was quite drawn into it, especially
when Alesi tried to go around the outside on T4 and was left with nothing
but the carbon tub for his efforts.

I know GP2 is old news, but this particular track was quite enjoyable, and
worth the download.  It's a shame F1 can't race at Mosport anymore.

We do get very light (with FF enabled you can really feel it ;-)). As for
catching air, it is a theorethical possibility, but catching air and making
the corners are mutually exclusive IMO.

One does grab some air twice on the back stretch, at T6 and before going
into T8.

I often found myself watching races in GP2 and often far too many laps
of it :o). No other sim (ICR2, N2, GPL, F1RS) has drawn me into
watching the AI race by them self as GP2 has done. I believe GP2 is in
a league of it's own here.

I once did some experimenting in GP2 where I tried to set the
parameters for the AI to match the real race. The outcome of the
simulated race was very similar to the real race. I was impressed.

Reading the rumours around GP3 I get the feeling that Mr Crammond has
found a publisher that will allow him and his team to not ship GP3
until they are satisfied with it. Mr Crammonds history of making
titles for other platforms (Amiga comes to mind) makes my hope for a
Linux version. I know there will be video games versions and I think
these versions will be a great hit, since Mr Crammonds support for
keyboard in both GP1 and GP2 is by far the best I've ever seen.

Directors cut is a nice feature in GP2, which will automatically cut
to the best action currently available in the race.

A GP2 AI race has been my "lunchtime screensaver" for the past two years.
It is amazing how many times I have gone away from the office and returned
to find a handful of people standing around my screen watching.  The only
thing that ruined it a little is the uneven frame rate from all the
external camera shots.

: I once did some experimenting in GP2 where I tried to set the
: parameters for the AI to match the real race. The outcome of the
: simulated race was very similar to the real race. I was impressed.

I love the concept of playing out real world scenarios, as is starting to
show up in the sims, and hope the next GP3 throws a few of these in, or
even allows the player to specify one before starting.  And a career mode
would be nice.

Well, even getting X up and running on my notebook was a bit of an
experience, so I'm not holding my breath for a smooth Linux
implementation.  the keyboard support is a blessing of Crammond's two F1
sims.  Sure, I love using analog control whenever I can, but GP2 is the
*only* sim that I can use on a notebook on a crowded flight, and it still
conveys the feel of on the edge driving with the keyboard.

It's a bit late sometimes.  Unless you jump on the replay when the "So and
so is out of the race" message comes up, you don't catch it.  Eidos new
game does a very good game of catching race highlights as they happen.
However, with the utilities available on the net, it's possible to save
and review a whole GP2 race, which is fascinating.  For me, this "game"
won't get old for a long time.  3 years and still a blast.

I think what he is trying to say is.. (and I do the same).

Run GP2, and create a AI-only race.  Let it run, and bingo it's your
screensaver.  I did that often, just launch a race, let it flow and come
back after dinner to watch the end of the race (I time it to 1hour of
racing.. so when Im back I get to see the last 10minutes of it)  ;-)

I used to do the same, often. In fact.. I once thought of running a full
championship season of AI races and reporting the results on a webpage.
I planned to start with a 1981 carset season and move though the years
up to 1998. Unfortunately I never got around to it :-(

Although soon I'll be doing the same with a full GPL season in which
I'll be participating :-)
