NASCAR Racing 2002 Season Announced

Well ***, there's nothing worth 50$ in that.  Most of that should had been
in N4.  Very dissapointing.  No mention of enhanced community multiplayer
options, nothing about the damage modeling, AI, etc...  No mention of BGN.

Track tours? Driving lessons?   NR2002 is *NOT* targeted to us.

December 26, 2001 (Bellevue, Washington)- Sierra Entertainment, Inc. is
proud to announce their latest racing title from the people who brought you
the first NASCAR(r) racing simulation game.  NASCAR(r) Racing 2002 Season,
developed by Massachusetts-based Papyrus Racing Games, will feature every
track in the 2002 NASCAR( Winston Cup Series with teams, drivers, and
sponsors of the 2002 race season. New driving lessons will bring novice
drivers up to speed, while track tours narrated by three-time NASCAR(r)
Winston Cup Series racing Champion Darrell Waltrip will help even the most
seasoned veterans find the fastest way around each circuit. Both novice and
seasoned drivers will experience the thrill and e***ment of racing like
the pros.  NASCAR(r) Racing 2002 Season is scheduled for release in February

"Our vision was to create a driving experience that combined realism with
accessibility," said Tom Faiano, six-year veteran of Papyrus and producer at
Papyrus Racing Games, "The driving lessons and the new driving aids will
help new players get acclimated to actually driving the car. Our continued
attention to the details of the sport - NASCAR's new rules for qualifying
engines and restrictor plates, including the 2002 drivers, teams and paint
schemes- makes our game the definitive simulation of 2002 NASCAR( Winston
Cup racing."

"The NASCAR( Racing series is one of our strongest franchises, " said Mike
Ryder, president of Sierra Entertainment, Inc., "The game's consistent
quality and mass appeal have made it a bedrock in our product line-up."

NASCAR( Racing 2002 Season's new sound system and enhanced photo-realistic
graphics capture the heart-pounding intensity of actual NASCAR( racing

What? Don't tell me you don't want to see the track tours featuring
Daryll Waltrip? ;)

I have to agree with you, at least they could have included the Busch
and the Craftman truck tracks. Not that I would really want to have 5
1.5 tri-ovals...sigh. Bring on an ASA sim!

NASCAR Racing 2002 Season Announced

Well...

Notice the lack of David Kaemmer's name there?

Makes ya wonder what he's up to, doesn't it?  He doesn't seem the sort
to just hand projects off to other people unless he has something
"more important" to work on.

Of course, I'm just speculating...

Also, I think that the description of NASCAR 2002 is pretty nice.
I've been saying for years that racing sim designers needed to look at
flight sims to see how they ease players into the games through
training missions and so forth, and while I've enjoyed every Papy
release since NASCAR 1 and ICR2, I am looking forward to seeing how
they implement the track guides/driving lessons and I'll more than
likely get something out them, if only entertaint (plus, hey, let's
face it I'm not a hotshoe).  I'd buy the game even if it were just N4
with the 2002 tracks, to be honest - after all, GPL 72 isn't going to
pay for itself - and I have yet to be disappointed by a Papy developed
product.  Regardless of how minimal the improvements are in NASCAR
2002, it will still be the most cutting edge driving simulation ever
developed, and I'm intrigued by the new features that have been added.

Is Sierra milking their license a little?  Sure.  Can you blame them?
Not really.  They need to release a new NASCAR title every year to
justify the cost of licensing and to keep interest in the series of
games high.  Is $50 steep for an addon pack?  Well, that depends.  I'd
personally pay $50 just for the new tracks/rules and a seamlessly
integrated video editor (thank you Papy for seeing the community's
interest in this - it better allow .avi exporting =).

Anyway, I plan on donating my money to the 'Where's Dave Kaemmer?'
fund come February, after donating $30 to the 'Who are these fine
Bugbear people?' fund come January 15th.

Hopefully improved AI and damage modelling is not mentioned for the usual
egotistical reasons that they don't want to acknowledge that N4 was less
than stellar in those two departments.

Better AI and realistic (as in actually realistic) damage better be in 2002,
though, if they want my money.

> Track tours? Driving lessons?   NR2002 is *NOT* targeted to us.

You sound pretty confident there... jk ;)

Personally, I'd LOVE IT it even half of the morons in the online
pickup races would take the time to learn to drive before coming
online.  This "driving lessons" feature can only help.  Hopefully, it
will be more involving than "mash gas, get off gas, get on brake,
turn, get off brake, mash gas, straighten wheel."

The game should sell like crazy once DW starts using it every race to
give track tours and explain for the millionth time to TV land viewers
what we mean when we say "tight" and "loose".

Wonder just how enhanced the graphics will be?  Hopefully the 3D
models will up the polygons, and I also hope they allow us to use more
pixels for each paint skin.

New sound system... hmm.  5.1?  Multiple outputs so you can run your
crewchief into headphones?

The "highlight reel" sounds like a really useful tool for folks trying
to promote league racing for sponsorships.

It seems like a bit more than just new tracks and skins... so, I'm
more interested than I was yesterday.
