Does Sierra NR2002 use SecuROM?

by Jeff Vince » Fri, 15 Feb 2002 23:33:25

Hi all.  I figure we'll be seeing all sorts of NR2002 reports
today, so I figured I'd get my question in.

Does NR2002 use SecuROM copy protection like NASCAR4 did?

   I hope not.

(Reading the sad tale below is optional...)
I bought N4 in good faith and it worked on my Celeron 300A(450MHz)
and HP 7500 CD Writer.  OK, it wasn't super fast, needed more CPU HP,
but it was passable.  I remember having a great online race at Watkins
Glen in the first days with some of the GPL crowd (even though the
fixed setups would always blow the motor there :).  A few weeks later,
I did some DAE with my CD Writer.  It worked fine reading the first CD
(about 6x speed), but by the time I got to the third or fourth disc, I
was down to 1x.  I guess I "broke" DAE on my CD Writer.
Unfortunately, it also "broke" the ability for it to read SecuROM copy
protection.  I could no longer get my install of N4 to work with the
original disc (much less a copy I made, which was successful before).
I had figured I would upgrade and get a new drive, but things haven't
worked out that way.  So I've got a nice $30 N4 coaster. :(  I may
consider upgrading for NR2002, but I wanted to know if a new CD reader
would be part of the cost.

For those who persisted and read this far, thanks.  I'm home with
the flu and feel pretty crappy.  Does it show?  :)

No, I'm just asking if the new sim will work on my existing
equipment.

Don't you remember the folks here on RAS that went to the extent of
buying new CD readers because their existing (and presumably
non-defective ;) CD readers didn't work with the copy protection that
Sierra chose to use for N4? -- And others that said they wouldn't
spend another $50 to run a #$%$& $50 game?

Just another example of the stupidity of copy protection,
you-know-whating the paying customer...  :(

If I was really blaming them, wouldn't I be asking them to buy me a
new CD reader, or at least to refund my money for a (currently
unusable) copy of N4?  :)

What's DAE?  Also, does your drive work with all your other games?

There have been a number of reports of copy protection damaging peoples
cdrom drives. Someone must be held accountable for this negligent behavoir
of the game publishers. Copy protection works by putting deliberate errors
on the cdrom. What do you think that does to your cd drive? I've had a
number of BSOD's in windows because one of my cdrom drives has a hard time
reading copy protected cdrom's at times. Time to put a stop to the madness.

Digital Audio Encoding, reading an audio CD as digital data (at
higher speed), versus as plain old 1x CD audio.  I was converting some
CDs into MP3s to have them available on my PC.

The drive works with all other games/programs I have.  It still
reads and writes CD-Rs and CD-RWs.  But whenever I try to start N4, I
get the "Error in KERNAL.DLL" error message.  I have since tried fresh
installs of both N4 and WinME with the same results (I had originally
thought I might have munged some system files, it wasn't until later
that I matched up the filedates with the failed DAE and N4 going MIA).

DAE=Digital Audio Extraction, Its an important feature for all those who like to record cd's they
don't own.

Bring the noise
Some copy-protection schemes could be more than just an annoyance.

By Dan Heilman

The antipiracy war being waged by the music industry has reached a level of
ruthlessness that might have seemed inconceivable in the past. European CD
buyers are being used as guinea pigs for technology that might prevent
copying of digital music tracks--and, according to some researchers, might
also render the tracks unlistenable, or even damage consumers' stereos.

And it's also important for those of us who DO own the CD's and want to
store the music on a portable player or computer.
