For some guys the patch would cause a spinning disc icon(the copy
protection) for ages and then game would fail to start.  The Securom
protection had been tightened for the patch.  Other games have been
affected.  This apparently fixes the problem.

That has been the favorite strategy in the media business for years now.

Why DO they continue to waste man-hours on this nonsense when they know
damned well it doesn't do any good.

If any company ever charted the cost involved vs. the actual, net benefit I
suspect some project managers would be fired on the spot.
