I'm just suggesting that you be sure the driver for your ethernet or modem
or USB whatever is the latest thing that the manufacturer supports.

Check out the NIC situation as has been advised here, but also be aware that
cable internet connections are not rock solid. It is not unusual to have a
long time of good service and then have sporadic periods of crappy
connections for no apparent reason. Sometimes it can be that your node is
getting full in your neighborhood. OR...
Like someone else mentioned, with these new worms out and about, they can
virtually disable a node (collection of cable internet users, usually in
banks of 256 modems or homes) with little to no warning.
I've had cable for about 3 years now at work and the first year was sweet,
solid, no problems. Now it is nothing to be downloading something and lose
my IP # (disconnecting me from everything but my own network) and when I
peep the router, it's fine, but the cable modem is in mid-reboot and is not
transmitting. This happens at least a few times a month now. Takes a couple
of minutes to reboot the mopdem (which it does on its own anyway) and about
half the time I have to renew my IP through winipcfg and sometimes it
doesn't release the IP and I can keep on going once the modem is back up and
running. Depends on the mood of my computer at the time I guess.
You didn't mention a router and to be on cable without one is very similar
to unprotected sex. It isn't a matter of if, but WHEN you will get bitten
and be infected by something or someone ***. Save your money if using a
software firewall. Code Green and Code Red worms a couple years back broke
right through several different packages, all high-end retail numbers too,
none of this shareware stuff. Nope, best to get a router if you have
broadband, ASAP. Won't happen to you? I said that too, about 2 hard drives
and 1 computer ago...don't count on it not happening to you.
