NR2003 Patch Problems

by senojm2 » Fri, 22 Aug 2003 22:24:51

Ever since a friend and I installed the patch we have not been able to
finish a multiplayer race without him getting knocked off.  We both have
cable internet and only play
using IP with the 2 of us and the AI cars, We've been doing this for years
without a problem until now. Anyone
have any ideas?

This might sound unrelated.... and you did not specify if you have an
internal cable modem, USB cable modem, external ethernet cable modem, etc.
or what operating system you are running; but I know of one case where a
Dell that came with a 3Com ethernet board was having similar problems and we
saw that Dell had an updated driver available.  After downloading the
driver, the problem seems to have gone away.  With all the MSBLAST worm
activity, alot of other software from Microsoft also got updated recently
too, so I cannot absolutely say that the problem was a bad driver.

I'm just suggesting that you be sure the driver for your ethernet or modem
or USB whatever is the latest thing that the manufacturer supports.

I started getting major disconnects with my system. I was using the on board
NIC (Nforce2 chipset). After switching to a SMC NIC I actually finished a
league race Tuesday night.

Thanks guys, I have an external Linksys cable modem connected by ethernet to
a Linksys NIC Card.
My buddy does have a Dell using an external cable modem and and on board
3Com etherenet.  I'll get him to
upgrade his drivers and see what happens.

Thanks again,
MJ

NR2003 Patch Problems

Check out the NIC situation as has been advised here, but also be aware that
cable internet connections are not rock solid. It is not unusual to have a
long time of good service and then have sporadic periods of crappy
connections for no apparent reason. Sometimes it can be that your node is
getting full in your neighborhood. OR...

Like someone else mentioned, with these new worms out and about, they can
virtually disable a node (collection of cable internet users, usually in
banks of 256 modems or homes) with little to no warning.

I've had cable for about 3 years now at work and the first year was sweet,
solid, no problems. Now it is nothing to be downloading something and lose
my IP # (disconnecting me from everything but my own network) and when I
peep the router, it's fine, but the cable modem is in mid-reboot and is not
transmitting. This happens at least a few times a month now. Takes a couple
of minutes to reboot the mopdem (which it does on its own anyway) and about
half the time I have to renew my IP through winipcfg and sometimes it
doesn't release the IP and I can keep on going once the modem is back up and
running. Depends on the mood of my computer at the time I guess.

You didn't mention a router and to be on cable without one is very similar
to unprotected sex. It isn't a matter of if, but WHEN you will get bitten
and be infected by something or someone ***. Save your money if using a
software firewall. Code Green and Code Red worms a couple years back broke
right through several different packages, all high-end retail numbers too,
none of this shareware stuff. Nope, best to get a router if you have
broadband, ASAP. Won't happen to you? I said that too, about 2 hard drives
and 1 computer ago...don't count on it not happening to you.
